Today's edition of quick hits:
* Progress: "North Korea announced on Wednesday that it would suspend nuclear weapons tests and uranium enrichment and allow international inspectors to monitor activities at its main nuclear complex, a step that raised the possibility of ending a diplomatic impasse that has allowed the country's nuclear program to continue with no international oversight for years."
* Ground offensive into Homs: "Despite mounting diplomatic pressure for a cease-fire, the Syrian military continued its bombardment of opposition strongholds on Wednesday."
* Egypt: "At least seven Americans employed by pro-democracy groups in Egypt who have been under criminal investigation will be allowed to leave the country."
* The meeting only lasted an hour: "House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) left a White House meeting Wednesday with President Obama and other congressional leaders 'hopeful' and 'encouraged'" about pending energy and jobs bills.
* James Murdoch steps down as executive chairman of News International.
* Factory orders in the Midwest pick up steam.
* At an Ohio factory today, Mitt Romney said, "I gotta press the button. That will be my heavy lift in terms of manufacturing."
* Does Romney oppose the Blunt Amendment? It sounds like it, but the campaign is denying it. More on this in the morning.
* NDAA: "The White House issued a presidential policy directive Tuesday evening that allows the president to largely disregard a provision in the most recent National Defense Authorization Act, which mandates military custody for non-American terrorism suspects captured on American soil."
* And on a related note, at a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.) questioned why torture-memo author Steven Bradbury been called to testify. Good for him.
Anything to add? Consider this an open thread.

On Jan. 29, J.R. "Bob" Dobbs appears in North Korea. 30 days later, North Korea suspends it's nuclear program! Coincidence? I think not!

I have to admit,I did'nt think Al Franken would make a good senator.I was wrong.
We need more comics in Congress and fewer clowns. The comics definitely have a better grasp of the laws of our country and what our country was founded on.
I'm from Minnesota and a liberal democrat. I voted for Franken because he was a democrat, but I wasn't sure he was going to be much of a senator. After all, Minnesota elected Jesse Ventura, a pro-wrestler, governor. But I am delighted to find that Al Franken actually took this seriously and has turned out to be a quick study of the rules and games of the US Senate.
Anybody who has looked at Franken's background knows that he's one smart and talented guy. Being a comedian who comments on social and political issues requires a great breadth of knowledge. Franken has also been a successful amateur athlete, author, speaker, and talk show host. He graduated cum laude from Harvard, so he didn't exactly skate through his undergraduate years.
Having read several of his books, I wasn't at all surprised that he has been a quick study and a principled voice for progressive issues. The research that went into his books is impressive. He, and the team he led to produce them, put in a ton of work. Let's hope Minnesotans have the same amount of smarts and re-elect him when he runs in 2014.
Maybe the Senator should ask this guy why he doesn't feel as though he violated the Constitution, Bill of Rights, and a whole host of other International laws and treaties that the US has been a signatory of, and why he shouldn't be in jail?
So far, I am impressed with the Steve Benen stories for our consumtion. Not just his contributions, but the entire staff has my respect and appreciation.
I do like watching what most think is boring (CSPAN), but I recall the Air America Days of Franken and Maddow among others…
To the ENTIRE staff… Thank you, wI appreciate your work, you make a difference.
He is right of course but until we convince Congress that we agree with Al nothing will change. Get the republicans out of Congress. If you want your State back also then kick them out of your state legislature too. Otherwise shake hands with the devil as he destroys America and all it once stood for.
