House Republicans apparently thought they were making a smart move when they tapped Rep. Vern Buchanan (R-Fla.) to lead the party's national fundraising efforts for 2012. And to a certain extent, the decision has paid off -- contributions to the NRCC have increased since Buchanan took over as finance chairman.
It's the ongoing allegations of corruption surrounding Buchanan that pose the larger problem.
Federal inquiries surrounding Mr. Buchanan appear to be widening, as investigators examine allegations that his companies improperly reimbursed contributors to his campaigns and claimed improper tax deductions and that he failed to include all his varied financial interests in his Congressional disclosure reports.
The Federal Election Commission has already completed one investigation that produced a settlement this week with a former partner of Mr. Buchanan's who used their car dealership to reimburse employees for contributing to the congressman's campaigns, in violation of federal law.
The commission dropped its case against Mr. Buchanan himself over the reimbursements, despite testimony that he took part in the scheme. But agents for the F.B.I. and the Internal Revenue Service recently contacted former employees alleging financial improprieties by Mr. Buchanan, who owns a number of auto dealerships throughout Florida and elsewhere and is one of the richest members of Congress.
In case that's not enough, the New York Times report added that a federal grand jury in Tampa is hearing evidence in the case, while the House Ethics Committee is investigating Buchanan's failure to disclose numerous financial interests.
As a rule, when a member of Congress has drawn the interest of the FBI, the IRS, a federal grand jury, and the House Ethics Committee -- all at the same time -- the politician in question has a bit of a problem on his hands.
When this politician is tasked with raising money to keep his caucus in the majority, it suggests his party has a problem on its hands, too.
Indeed, following up on an item from two weeks ago, the number of House Republicans facing allegations of misconduct -- to varying degrees of severity -- keeps growing.
* Rep. Spencer Bachus (R-Ala.), chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, is under investigation for insider trading.
* Rep. Michael Grimm (R-N.Y.) is facing allegations he accepted illegal campaign contributions during his 2010 campaign, aided by a district supporter who's facing a federal criminal investigation.
* Reps. Pete Sessions (R-Texas), Buck McKeon (R-Calif.), and Elton Gallegly (R-Calif.) have been accused of receiving special favors through Countrywide's VIP mortgage program.
The Hill recently flagged several other pending controversies:
* Rep. David Rivera (R-Fla.), who is being investigated by the FBI, IRS, Miami-Dade Police Department's public corruption unit, the Miami-Dade State Attorney's Office and Florida Department of Law Enforcement over allegations that he abused his former seat in Florida's state House of Representatives for personal financial gain and repeatedly lied on financial disclosure forms.
* Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.), who came under fire last year when a New York Times article raised questions of legality around his former company's dealings.
* Rep. Joe Walsh (R-Ill.), who is accused of owing $117,000 in child support to his ex-wife, which he did not report on his financial disclosure forms and, if true, would violate House rules.
All of this only refers to ongoing controversies, and doesn't include New York Rep. Chris Lee (R) and Nevada Sen. John Ensign (R), both of whom resigned last year in the wake of sex scandals.
This hasn't quite reached the "culture of corruption" GOP scandals of 2005 and 2006, but it's getting there.

Republicans KNOW that there is widespread election fraud.
Because god made them do it.
Win at all costs.....at any cost...Just Win!!!
As a rule, when a member of Congress has drawn the interest of the FBI, the IRS, a federal grand jury, and the House Ethics Committee -- all at the same time -- the politician in question has a bit of a problem on his hands.
It would if it was a demoncrat! However, Mr. Buchanan is a republican and the only sins a republican politician can commit that are mortal are being caught with a dead woman or a live man in their bed. And then some times the dead woman gets overlooked and you get to host The Morning Joke Show.
The writing was on the wall when the RNC installed a white-supremacist as their chairman after firing an African American from that position.
Republicans now have to resort to fraud, crimes, and lies to "get the message out".
Because all the smart ones left the GOP when the Tea Party invaded.
The committee that investigates ethics charges is comprised of equal number of members from both parties to avoid the appearance of being political. If charges are preferred against the representative then it means that a member of that person's party agreed to the charges.
Mike,
True that.
This sounds like what happened to Republicans in 2006 all over again, when greed, corruption, perfidity and pedophelia cost them control of the House and Senate. What it is about the GOP and money? As soon as one of the party's poobahs gets close to it, they begin hiding it in their pockets.
Every good republican will tell you that the only reason that the republicans lost in 2006 & 2008 was that they were not conservative enough.
Every good republican will tell you that the only reason that the republicans lost in 2006 & 2008 was that they were not
conservativecrazy enough.Gee and all they had to do in the fifties was buy voters a beer. Then some do gooder thought it was unAmerican to buy votes so drinking on election day was made taboo.
Fry the SOB! Quit playing softball with voter fraud. Let's see which side gets the most arrests and convictions.
I love a good fantasy. One of my favorites is a judge's ruling that the country will no longer be forced to pay for John Ensign's lucrative retirement and healthcare for the rest of his miserable life.
Good one! This is outrageous, isn't it.
Corruption doesn't seem to bother Republicans in Florida ever since Rick Scott got caught bilking Medicare out of millions of dollars.
And regarding Buchanan, I only hope the FBI and any other investigative teams don't overlook the opportunity of getting advice from the MN Attorney General regarding myriad ways for the owner of many car dealerships can launder and syphon off gazillions of dollars for "repurposing". Denny Hecker is in prison. I'm sure he'd like the company.
It's all projection. Every single time the tealiban gets on crusade against something, you bet THEY are the ones guilty and looking to find ways to hide it.
@Elle Kaye; My fantasy is that when they get caught and they resign, they all lose all taxpayer benefits. Never happen, but one can dream.
And at what point will he be asked to submit his resignation?!? Oh yeah, well Vitter is still there, so much for E-T-H-I-C-S!!
Let's not forget Indiana GOP Secretary of State Charlie White, convicted of six felonies including perjury and theft.
Walsh is from my area.
This is a guy who keeps blasting the President about debts and the deficit.
Had his condo foreclosed on.
His wife finally went after him when he became a representative, because Walsh could no longer hide his income. Which he was doing. Claimed he had no money, but took his new squeeze on multiple vacations to places such as Mexico.
Walsh's counter to his wife's claim is that he owes her money, just not that much. He's never come up with HIS amount that he owes.
Another tea party favorite who can't seem to handle money. Hmmm.
I would be very surprised if Walsh was reelected. I suspect he is on his way out. Thank goodness I live in Schakowsky's district.
OK, I have to ask. Are there Democrats with similar problems? I tend to filter my news by interest, and my interest is in things that make the GOP look bad. How do the members of the two parties compare wrt corruption? I'm asking here, mainly because I'm too lazy to look it up myself. Thanks.
Dems have their issues, but the GOP is worse, more blatant, and they have far less of a guilty conscious or shame when busted!! They usually have righteous indignation!!!
Congressman Rangel, Congressman Weiner, Congressman Jefferson - sorry the GOP has the others "under supposed investigation" and they've been investigating so long I can't even remember who they are.....
Thanks! You saved me a bunch of effort. Um . . . didn't these investigations start up, like, ages ago? I can't remember, either, but I do filter my news input, as stated before. In any case, I appreciate your quick turnaround on my question.
Maxine Waters, (D - Cal.), is under another long-running investigation that looks like it might fizzle out. Beyond that, in addition to those named above, you might have to go back a ways to guys like Jim Wright and Dan Rostenkowski.
I hesitate to make a comparison, because these things seem to come in waves.
Only the dems haven't been in a "wave" for a while now.....
I'm afraid that as soon as I go on the road with my stand-up..Repuboobs will come to their senses and I will have no more material to use.....Well, I'm not falling for that old trick!!!
Rachel, this dirt bag has a fantastic progressive opponent named Keith Fitzgerald. You should invite him on your show!
