ABC News: White House to announce "accomodation" for religious organizations on contraception rule.
Three state attorneys general threaten to sue the Obama administration over the contraception coverage mandate.
How Catholic bishops prepared for the battle over birth control. And who's really upset about birth control if not Catholics?
Santorum on women in combat and "emotions".
Romney huddles with conservatives to try to reconnect.
That thing about the Florida delegates? Still up in the air.

where do they find the mutants behind him? Ah, thats his base.
No surprise. Just another unacceptable, unconscionable cave to the forces of evil by this White House. Obama has [proven himself disturbingly spineless and willing to compromise to the detriment of the causes he once espoused. Religious organizations do not have free reign over which provisions of the Constitution they would like to adhere to. Women's health is far more important to our national well;-being than appeasing a scandalized organization. http://www.sunstateactivist.org
Tell Obama. Maybe he does not realize how much more support he could garner if he quit compromising his principles.
This is what women want and the military are for it then let it alone none of your business so but out.
The one question I've been wondering about is, does the medical coverage include vasectomies?
Viagra for sure .
Vasectomies were never a question...nor was pregnancy, a rather more expensive avenue.
Well, of course Santorum opposes women in combat! All the more reason to be ARMY STRONG! That man has collected so many fanswats that I've stopped counting!
I don't think that man would know an emotion if it walked up and sat in his lap.
Guess it depends where on his lap. ; )
Naw, not even that!
You win.
Why is Santorum against freedom and liberty? Why does he oppose the right to choose? Is it because he knows his is a narrow minded unpopular view?
This whole silly season has shown us how the right wants to shred your rights and force religion upon us all. A corporate sponsored ,greed based, religion that sees corporations as people and people as sheep to be herded and controlled?
The People of America must seriously organize and determine how they are going to use their votes this year that will vote out Republicans and Career Politicians of both parties. We can't put up with these guys any longer. The consequences of having them around is too great.
Throw the baby out with the bathwater! I guess it beats letting obstructionist republicans remain, a bit extreme given the fact we do need experience--unless you want congressional aides(many of whom are religious right wing operatives)to have even more control.
I still don't understand the "unconstitutional" argument that is being brought up by the health care thing. Can someone explain that to me?
Forcing your business to provide healthcare is really no different than having that business pay worker's comp or unemployment insurance...
If the disagreement comes with purchasing health care that helps with contraception, i'm even more confused. Nobody is forcing the employee to use these things, they're just covered in the situation that they would want them. And why is a religious organization hiring people who openly oppose their beliefs and use contraception anyway...??
Republicans don't really believe it's unconstitutional; it's just another red herring they are trying to make into a political issue for the election. See the "Republicans reverse themselves" segment from last night's show. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) said it himself - they don't see it as any different from requiring people to have auto insurance; everyone needs healthcare, so an individual mandate makes sense. Or at least it did before Obama became President.
And if the Catholic or other religious organizations don't want to have to follow federal laws, don't take federal funding for anything. You can't have it both ways. Of course, they'll kick and scream but they won't stop taking the federal funds. So very principled they are, huh?
Who is possibly going to be caving in on their demands? That's principled.
Religious liberty is merely a fig leaf for conservative culture war attacks on moderates and liberals.
Name one conservative who supports religious liberty exemptions for
- institutions which have (religious) moral objections to war and refuse to cooperate with the military by allowing ROTC, military recruiters, notifying draft boards
- individuals who refuse to cooperate with the military system by registering with draft board and withholding the portion of taxes funding war making and its mass murder by way of nuclear weapons of innocent men, women, children, and abortion by incineration of pregnant women
- plural marriage by Mormons which considered it a core religious belief
- use of prohibited drugs like peyote and marijuana in religious ceremonies and practice
Note how conservatives claim opposition to gay marriage is a violation of religious conscious and will lead to plural marriage, which today results in prosecution of Mormons who follow the original Mormon faith calling for plural marriage.
Note how conservatives condemn drug use as a violation of religious belief in the body as a temple, and prosecute those who use drugs as part of their religious ceremonies and practice while carving out a religious exception for underage drinking of alcohol.
When conservatives have no rational democratic republican rationale for a political position, one fig leaf they grab to hide their fallacy is religious liberty.
apparently womens rights, in general really peeve the right..
Apparently women really peeve the right. I have never seen such regressive, discriminating, medieval opinions by any group than I have seen in this bunch. What really blows my mind are the women who are backing them! What is that? Jealousy? I don't know what rock these women crawled out from under, but they had better wake up before they find themselves in long robes with face masks to hide the shameful fact that they are women. It's out there, sisters. You had best start to be worried.
They just want to play games and looking for an attack weapon.
If the prescription in question was condoms or the religion pushing it was Islam, we will be having a whole other argument all together.
I wonder if we might introduce Rick Santorum to someone like Tammy Duckworth... considering she has already been as close to combat as you can get.
Santorum: dupe/pawn or cynic/pawn? I can't decide from day to day.
Could someone parse for me what Sanctified Santorum meant in that bit about women on the front lines? Sometimes I get the impression that his inner critic is trying to keep him from his worse instincts and so often what he says comes out sounding quite confused and confusing.
That's because he is confused and confusing himself. I can't believe that Minnesota let him win the caucus. What have we turned into here?
Didn't we learn enough from T-Paw?
He wasn't confused. He was just trying to say women are inferior without offending too many women.
And yes, he won MN, but he only got @22,000 votes. So I don't know if I'd be bragging all that much if I were him. Republicans didn't even care enough to make them miss American Idol.
He is more confusing but really he is just dumb. He is one of them men how believe women are nothing better then dog.
So now Santorum says women should not serve in combat because we may be too EMOTIONAL. He says men in combat get emotional too because of "camaraderie", but "it would be even more unique if women were in combat". UNIQUE?? Is that because of our hormones?? Might we get hysterical?? Santorum should speak to women in the Israeli military. The level of this man's ignorance is astounding.
So in Sanotrum's view we should not send women into battle because they're too emotional. But it would be okay to send John Boehner?
There are many, many women who are tougher, both emotionally and physically, than Boehner and Santorum put together.
I don't know about you but his mean comments almost made me cry. As it was I just had to eat a whole box of chocolate just to calm down.
***please read with a high level of sarcasm****
smb - it's a wit exactly like your's that I would want next to me in any dangerous situation. Well played.
SMB,
And then the stress made you irregular, and you had to eat some extra Activia to regulate your system. We've all been there, sister!
Grins.
Santorum, the ultimate chauvinist pig.Mitt Robme not far behind. What kind of laws will the republicans come up with to stiffle women votes, like they have the poor, elderly and disabled voters?
What could Rick Santorum possibly know of soldiers' camaraderie, having not had the courage to ever serve in the US military himself? In true republican form, this man's opinion is not credible.
@jt1962 The catholic church doesn't want to cover, according to the letter, "...coverage for contraceptives, sterilization and related services". I presume that covers not only vasectomy, but historectomy and a host of other procedures that would reduce fertility as well.
@ludwigtr They are not allowed to discriminate in hiring based on religion, race etc...
I think Santorum may have been trying to say that men's emotions will interfere...that they will have a natural urge to protect women. Which, of course, as Golda Meir pointed out about an entirely different matter in Israel, is a problem with the men.
I am concerned as to what extent the Obama administration is going to "compromise" on the women's health coverage issue. The only compromise I would find acceptable would be to allow Religious employers/universities (including the churches themselves) to limit birth control (and abortion coverage) in medical insurance provided to employees/students who are members of their faith. For those employees who are *not* members of the particular religious sect, the religious employer should be prohibited from denying the coverage.
Why isn't anyone speaking about the religious freedom of the employees?
Because conservatives define the bounds of religious liberty and liberals let them.
Religious liberty is merely a fig leaf for conservative culture war attacks on moderates and liberals.

Dear Mr Santorum - I've heard that in some countries women are allowed to drive cars, carry guns, manage companies, and EVEN vote! I've even read that in some country, a woman was selected as Secretary of State. Since we all know how forward-thinking you are, maybe you could take a look at this and see if you think we women could handle some of these amazing feats! We stand willing and waiting to serve - if you think we can.
I would pay money to see Hillary take him on.
Or Rachel Maddow?
Oral contraceptives are used for a multitude of health conditions. Dysmenorrhea, fibroids, mental health problems, etc. Would then the church just deny women use of these drugs simply because they are also used to control fertility? This is a women's health issue, plain and simple. And besides that, I do believe women have a right to control their fertility.
This is discrimination against women, particularily poorer women. It is mostly people who are out of touch, not effected by an issue, that get to have a say about it and that's not right.
The logical reasons The Catholic Church is anti contraception is to keep making new little Catholics. I very much doubt a nationwide ban would make a lot of little new republicans.
Huh? Doesn't this come standard with every liberal date?
Rachels show was great last night. So glad to finally here one of the pro Obama talking heads actually ask why it has taken Obama, Holder etc to get on the deeper investigation and accountability issue with the banksters and foreclosure fraudsters. Many of them one and the same. She actually asked Schniederman that question. He made excuses for Obama. But better late than never. Hopefully it is true that this investigation will go deep and we will witness real accountability and justice
Yeah, I agree, but seriously, why is no one else picking up on what Schniederman said about this particular settlement is JUST about the ROBO-SIGNING part? It isn't like the binding tobacco settlement where it was one-shot and you're done - it is a care of nibbling around the edges and then WHAM! the hammer comes down. I like that better.
I'm assuming the word "discrete" is used a lot.
I must be in a mood today, but those tips sure sound like something I've heard in a movie, I just can't remember which one.
Rachel and Maddow team could you folks have Professor William Black on to discuss the most recent banking fiasco. He was one of the head litigators during the S&L scandal.
Also could you also have Marcy Wheeler/Emptywheel (PHD) on about the foreclosure issue. Her website is EMPTYWHEEL.NET. She is brilliant Rachel would love her. She has been asking why the Obama administration has not dealt with the bankster accountability issue for years now. She is also a brainiac about Gitmo, wiretapping, the Plame outing (one of the first bloggers to be given permission to operate out of the press room during the Plame trial in DC), drone attacks etc.
She would be great as a guest on the Maddow show on the banking issue

Hopefully the more loud and absurd the right become, the more liberals will get out and vote. The last presidential election turned my state blue for the first time - hoping we can do it again. Indiana looks much better in blue than in red.
Amen from a fellow Hoosier!
