Executive producer Bill Wolff shares a preview of tonight's show:

When it comes to birth control and the Catholic church there are two questions that need to be answered..... That are not going to be addressed in the current controversy.
How long is the Catholic church going to hold on to their asinine policy of opposition to birth control, and how long are old, celibate men going to hand down edicts about issues that involve screwing?
Why do I get the feeling I am getting sucked into something here ? Anyway. Screwing ??!! Your argument was making prefect sense until you spite on my mama’s shoes. I now reserve the right of my remaining time.
How long did the inquisitions last? How long did the Church deny the world was round? How long did they claim the sun revolved around the Earth? How long have they denied the existence of evolution? How long have some denied the Earth and universe are billions, not thousands of years old? When your whole existence depends on selling unprovable dogma you weaken your stance every time you are forced to admit you are wrong.
And, drum beat, the answer---------Until the smoking chimney at the Vatican is followed by the appearance of the newly selected Pope. A non-celibate woman. The only hope for reversal of the asinine.
Truth is: Religion in many cases is not the fault of God as much as man’s failures as mind readers ( interpretations ) of what God’s wants are. If God truly believes man must be the servant of his whims, than slavery is “ natural “ and normal. When religion frees it self from slavery, it will be ready for the future.
An woman Pope ? H*ll Yah !! About time.
One step at a time...I think we would have to have a female catholic priest first. Then maybe in a 100 years we may have a female pope.
My sons and I are big fans and I think the best new thing today is this animation that my son did of the Seattle football stadium:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=98EvwIGFB7s
It looks like he filmed it but it is actually thousands of still images put together with sound from Patrick Reza's remixed Midnight Lights. Through his producers my son contacted the folks in Seattle and the arranged to have the stadium overnight for one night. He gathered twelve amateur photographers through Craigslist and they shot each bank of lights separately. It is an amazing piece. You have to watch it. We love you Rachel!
How old is your son? Great job with the animation. You're right if you hadn't said otherwise this viewer would perceive the youtube clip as a video. Again nice work!
If there is a God, I have to assume he or she is a pretty smart cookie. And realizes birth control is absolutely essential, moral, and should be made easily available.
Last time I had a heart to heart over this subject with her, God said , " That would be nice ."
Could it be that zealots have read the line "of man born" and fear the rebirth can be stopped by contraception?(they are crazy enough to think like that)
If he or she does exist and does not realize this, that makes me smarter than God. I'm uncomfortable with that.
As everyone has to endure the right of morality, in that everyone is a mix of good and not so good, a little republicanism will exist even in the best of us. You will get over it.
Rachel,
So it's full-on every night, again tonight another full throated effort to make the U.S. criminal War of Aggression against Iraq, a nation that did us no harm, was not a belligerent, and that may take generations to recover from the national traume your parade is to "honor", once the U.S. mercenary occupation is complete, attempt for that slaughter to be crudely legitimized, made to appear respectable in retrospect, with a parade up the "Canyon of Heroes". It will not work. The Nation's conscience remains deeply wounded, that's why this infantile disorder at revisionism. To celebrate what? Those people willingly, knowingly volunteered to participate in the "Shock and Awe"atrocities, the total and utter ruin of an innocent population. There is no honor in that. Veteran's Day is sufficient. Why are you so consumed with this chauvinist pandering?
Tuesday a near wet kiss fete with CouncilWoman Christine Quinn, preceded by absurd archival footage of post WWII parades, an actual Just War aginst Fascim, not a proto fascist crime like the attack on Iraq, aseries of constant verbal ejaculations to the excited conclusion of an embarrassment, and then again last night, adamently positioning yourself TO THE RIGHT of an Assistant Sec. of the DEFENSE DEPT! Only Christopher Hitchens could have pulled that hat trick off, congratulations. High velocity, unrelenting, barreling through a commercial brake for 10 full minutes of no-holds barred, disgraceful, frothing worthy of Oliver North, or Elliot Abrams. your new ideological cohort. This is disgarceful to witness, and many people are furious. Yea, as you so tellingly revealed, "we'll have this one, and another when Afghanistan is over"..Good god, was it DADT and the proximaty to the Airforce pilot you soexcitedly, fawningly reported;"And he's flown 26 combat missions over Iraq!"? Children died under those bombs and missles, just as when napalm John McCain bombed Hanoi. Was it your trip to Iraq and firing the big weapons, or are you just a run of the mill Liberal Imperialist. Shame. Who will lead this "Parade"Your darling Counter Insurgency guru Patreus, Colin Powell, how about "Mission Accomplished" himself? Will you be in the reviewing stand cheering them on, and on to greater "victories" in Iran tomorrow, Syria, the month after, it does get your juices flowing, evidently. The question is why?
I think American Muslim Veterans should lead in the parade. You see, the parade is not about a religious war, it is about America. That is what they fought for. The soldiers are for the most part, really just children, that had to grow up way to fast to be natural. They need our support.
Emmett,
I don't agree with all you've said here, but I do see where you are coming from. I learned, the hard way, in the Viet Nam war, to hate the war, but love the warrior. I believe we should honor those who volunteered and placed their lives in danger to serve in our armed forces. They did not choose the war. Bush/Cheney did that for them. They served our country with honor and in many cases valor. They deserve recognition for that. Here's my problem. The military itself should be the ones calling for these parades. They know best how and when to honor those who served and fought. Pundits, newspeople and others wanting to make a big splash should wait for the military to lead on this. They will know when it's the time to have a welcome home parade and will, I'm sure, put on a big and worthy one.
One more thing. No amount of marching, band playing and thank-yous will bring back those who lost their lives, restore lost limbs, or heal damaged minds. The only help for that is to not do this @!$%# again.
And you are a complete unAmarican idiot. I'll bet you feel the same way about Korea and Viet Nam. I was in Nam and I'm neither a mercanary or slaughterer. I fought for my country just as these soldiers have.
The horrors visited on both Korea and Vietnam by the U.S. are known to the world, particularly those who endured the aggressions. Participating in that was not fighting for the U.S., it was Crimes Against Peace. Problem is you perpetuate your dangerous and stupid "unamerican" nonsense as if such an oxymoronic category existed, grow up.
How can fighting in Viet Nam be called "fighting for my country". Viet Nam never attacked us.
Stray Cats for tonight's soundtrack? Holy crap!! Wouldn't this make you more comfortable, Bill?
I'm wondering how the drug companies are reacting to this.
Rachel - I AM SO GLAD YOU WERE BORN!!!! You were the best new thing in the world the day you were born!
Should the Christian Science Monitor be allow to deny ALL health care coverage to its Catholic employees, on the basis that it doesn't believe in medicine?
Rachel- I'm glad you were born- and I don't just go around saying that to anybody :)
I expect better of Rachel Maddow than what she said about smoking tobacco. This is a scapegoat issue, one of several that has become mainstream. Smoking isn't healthy, but it is also not the leading cause of breathing-related disease in the US, and this is an issue that is screaming for attention. The most carcinogenic type of smoke is the kind that contains oil particles. The primary source is traffic. Our cars and trucks. Virtually no one has exposure to second-hand tobacco smoke today, and yet rates of breathing-related disease/cancer certainly haven't decreased. That's because most of us are exposed to traffic fumes. Even those who live in areas with public transportation insist that they have a fundamental human right to drive! We continue to attack the few who smoke while WE are spewing massive amounts of carcinogens into the air. Smokers can annoy, but it is drivers, not smokers, who are responsible for catastrophic climate change. (Run your finger along an unwashed city window, and pay attention to the greasy streak: this is what lines our lungs.) The American Cancer Society does agree with this, and tries to justify the scapegoating of smokers by stating that smoking is the "leading preventable cause of" disease. However, there is much we could do to reduce traffic (such as fight those Republicans who have been working so hard to de-fund public transportation). The problem is, we want someone else, not us, to make needed changes.
Rachel - you are VERY good at your job and we all are great full you were born sooooooooooooooo you go get um girl!
(you actually do get um that is why they don't like ya LOL)
I'm tired of hearing people say that the negative ads are making people dislike a candidate. Maybe the content of an ad changes a view on a person, and rightfully so, but just the fact that there is so much negativity doesn't cause someone to throw their hands up and run to Obama. If it were true that spewing negativity will turn around and hurt them, how is it that 60-70 percent of all Republicans watch FOX news? Their life-force is hate. They love it.
Rachel,
In a world of misconceptions, misunderstandings, and miscarriages of justice I truly would miss The Rachel Maddow Show had you not been born. Have you hugged your parents today?
I just wanted to give a kudo or three to Rachel for (being born and) the persistence in justifying a parade for our returning troops.
I think it would be very helpful for them to know we are glad they are home and IAVA can help them find their way after all they went through.
Outstanding show tonight. Raise a glass to celebrate the births of all who took part!
Did you love Maureen Walsh's speech on the floor in Olympia? Would you like to thank her for honoring your family in a way that honors hers? Well, you could buy her family's Walla Walla Sweet Onion Sausage: http://www.onionworld.com/
(No, I'm not affiliated with the Walshes or their sausages. I haven't even tasted them, although I've heard from lots of folks who've been to festivals in Walla Walla that they're great. But wouldn't it be fun to buy out their whole year's production in the week after that speech?)
Yes, in fact, it would. I rarely have been able to be present for a more touching, caring, compassionate oration and deeply appreciate your bringing it to your viewers.
This is a wonderful person, who celebrates her daughter and her decisions as most parents should. I generally don't like to "should" on people, but in this case I think it is appropriate. We were born into the family we have for a reason. So many times we allow our thinking in absolutes to destroy important and challenging relationships. Family is important to us because they are an integral part of who we are.
The saddest part of our society today is that our families have been torn apart for so many tragic and real reasons. That one of us has grown into a different life than our own, could as well be a reason for celebration and Ms. Walsh has shown us how to do that.
We are all richer for her speech.
Why is the Catholic Church now raising the issue of its freedom to avoid employment requirements on the basis of its Constitutionally granted religious freedom? Could the recent decision of the Supreme Court in the Hosanna-Tabor v. EEOC case have invited this? Almost at the end of that decision we read: "There will be time enough to address the applicability of the [ministerial] exception to other circumstances if and when they arise."
If contraceptives aren't mandatory, I'd like to see that medications for erectile dysfunction are also off the formularies.
I'd like that too, but it would not be consistent with their desires to procreate more Catholics.
Perhaps there would be a requirement for the insured to prove they are married and heterosexual, but that might be viewed as controlling men.
re: Foreclosure Settlement w/AG Schneiderman.
I have no doubt that AG Schneiderman is sincere when he expresses his intentions to continue to pursue investigations & prosecutions in the financial and housing markets fraud-fest. He is also, IMHO, among the best of possible choices for the role the President tapped him to fill as coordinator of Federal efforts to investigate and prosecute mortgage origination and securitization fraud (of course, that last bit is a bit of a malapropism given the complete lack of any action on those fronts by Obama's regulatory & law enforcement agencies).
That said, the settlement was discussed Thurs eve with far more enthusiasm than is merited. Now that an actual document is available to experts and analysts to review and examine, a consensus perspective is beginning to emerge regarding the robustness and efficacy of the agreement. Thus far, the consensus is arriving at conclusions that differ sharply with the settlement "happy talk" echoed on TRMS this evening.
I'd provide links, but they tend to get sanitized. So, aside from using "the google", take a peek at bloomberg, Reuters, Big Picture, CR, and many other sites for more objective analysis of a settlement that will - purportedly - give qualified victims of foreclosure fraud monetary compensation that's - at best - 1/28th of the magnitude of the actual problem.
Amazing how few comments on this farcical settlement. I so wish I could believe Schneiderman about investigation/prosecutions of bank fraud. Why hasn't DOJ done anything about it before now? I remember this admin's statement, "noone is above the law", HA, we saw how that went.
Amazing indeed. Amazingly sad. I believe the dearth of comments on this matter results from a multitude of motivations, least of which is the supposed complexity of it all. On that end, Rachel has really let the viewership down. The core legal and financial concerns at the heart of the housing bubble/bust and financial markets' bubble/bust are actually strikingly simple. The basics are property theft and fraud. period.
Here's one example of using the simplified "lens" to examine some of the common malfeasance feeding the bubbles and collapses. Bonuses. Yes, bonuses. Bonuses earned by nearly every "stakeholder" across the "food-chain" of mortgage origination/refi to "n-th" iteration securitization (e.g.: the bundling of MBS, the insuring of those tranches and the ratings of those tranches). In a stunning display of electronic systems ability to facilitate scale, the MERS and other mediums themselves became totems within the respective industries that were a "virtual" bulletin-board announcing that anyone who wanted to bend (or pulverize) the rules could do so with no worry or concern about the legalities. The context became one where everybody was guilty so, in practice, nobody was guilty. It was - and remains! - the largest, most destructive manifestation of "moral hazard" (by design) in history.
The edifice was built upon not a "ponzi model" but simple theft. Property titles became (remain??) irrelevant - a "crowd-sourced" execution that no less than reversed hundreds of years of property law reaching as far back as 1215 CE. The legally requisite process of property title transfer was simply abandon. It was abandon for a variety of reasons, principal among them was the "need" to accelerate and expand the number of transactions any and all of the "stakeholders" could execute. Title transfer impedes that process, not because it's "slow" (a lie that's all too often repeated in this age of light-speed communications) but because titles are material evidence of ownership and value.
Evidence was lethal poison to the housing/financial markets' "employees" because it stood as an unimpeachable object testifying to the fact or ownership and value. A market driven by transactions (close or die mentality) requires that ownership and value be made to be as fungible as any other "characteristic" of an asset. Fungibility facilitates scale and scale is achieved by "perpetually" doubling the number of transactions - which also introduces radically price inflation. For example, think of the movie Scarface and the commodity driving the plot. In that world, like mortgage lending and finance, every "transaction" exacts a fee from the asset and or deal-size. The easiest, less expensive means to overcome the losses from transaction fees to to "cut" the product with a "look-a-like" product allowing the seller to pass-on a product that looks whole but is not. Thus, famous lines in drug movies such as "it's been stepped on so many times it's not even baby power anymore."
Or, instead of my in-the-moment rambling, I offer you the concluding paragraph from a post on the multi-state agreement by FDL's Dave Dayen:
As DDay points out, the "forgeries and fabricated documents" were manufactured in service of theft. Those who were robbed did not merely lose their home, they all too often lost their life's savings and their 3rd class ticket out of the rat race once age made working full time unmanageable.
It would really be a good thing if Rachel and staff chose to forgo their own 5 minute misinterpretation of the causes and effects of this man-made disaster - this grand theft nation. Perhaps a whole show dedicated to the matter with any number of experts and/or observers as guests. As it stands today, the "resolution" to this crisis - yes, crisis as in still pretty damned urgent - is years away. One last data point to illuminate the gravity of the crisis - for those victimized (directly & indirectly) - and the criminal enterprise (you know who).
The estimated total of the value lost by home-owners in the US alone tops $8 trillion. Some estimates are far higher. Either way, the evaporation of a sum of money that is larger than the GDP of every nation on the planet (with the US being the sole exception) merits far more political, media and popular attention than its getting.
Whatever happened to separation of Church and State? Can we please outlaw all propagation of religious dogma outside of a designated religious facility? I can't watch a football game without some fool falling on his knees or a baseball game without batters crossing themselves and gazing heavenward, they were having prayer meetings on Survivor and The Amazing Race, total strangers insist on telling me "I am a Christian" as if anyone cares. Now actual canidates for President are publicly indulging in group hugs with prayers. I switched to politics for some relief and it has been a nonstop rant on religious rights and birth control. What has come over this country? People used to keep their religion a private deviation. ENOUGH ALREADY!! What about my rights not to have to listen to this crap!
This is 2012 not 1012. If these people want to believe this religious fantasy - fine let them, but the relatively few remaining intelligent sane adults don't want to hear about it.
Please help! Does the Constitution guarantee MY individual right to freedom of religion? Or does it protect the rights of an organization like a "church" (which, like "corporations", are NOT mentioned in the Constitution) to impose its collective "beliefs", on those individuals who work for them? I thought the Bill of Rights was intended to protect the rights of individuals.
BTW - I am also glad you were born!
In this show, you pointed out the Republican woman crying about her changed view on gay people who have a love so strong, how can anyone deny them marriage? And it made me think about your view on plural marriages, and I found a hypocrisy there. How can anyone try to keep ANY relationship from forming a legal contract together. What is immoral to one person may not be immoral to another. I find it odd that Christians who are gay, want to be legally married, but they know their Bible says it's a sin, would then turn around and tell a plural family that they are living in sin. Who can say what love is "right"? I'm actually happy to be single. Love is painful when it's over. But I'd never deny someone their love.
