Candace Gingrich-Jones knows things about her brother Newt. For one thing, she knows that their shared last name is supposed be pronounced with a "K" at the end, and not with the "CH" sound he took on.
She knows what he eats at holiday meals. And she knows what the anti-gay Mr. Gingrich and his wife, Callista Gingrich, sent as a present for her very gay wedding. File under "Not Surprising, Just Delightful":
CANDACE GINGRICH-JONES: The catch is that, you know, when we leave the dinner table or leave the Christmas gathering, you know, he and Callista still have way more rights than my wife, Rebecca, and I do.
RACHEL MADDOW: Well, he did make a political point of saying on "Meet the Press" at one point that if you ever got married, that he would not go to the marriage, he would not go to the ceremony. I understand that that's the case that he didn't go. You invited him?
GINGRICH-JONES: He was invited. Yes. Yes, absolutely we invited he and Callista. They happened to be on some other continent on the day of the actual ceremony. So --
MADDOW: Yes, is that hurtful or --
GINGRICH-JONES: Well, we still got a gift.
MADDOW: Was it from Tiffany's?
GINGRICH-JONES: I'm not at liberty to say.
MADDOW: Very discreet. Well done.

When I heard the exchange about the present, while washing the dinner dishes, my immedate thoughts, in order, were:
"Ooooo. That's over the line,"
"I wonder if Rachel warned her that was coming,"
"Nice parry. None of you bidnez, Rachel."
The public's right to know has limits, and that, to me, was one of them.
My opinion. Worth every cent you paid for it. :)
Next Star, I, too, though Ms Maddow and Ms Gingrich both did an excellent job. I'd like to hear more from Ms Gingrich, my guess is we will.
And you are entitled to it. Perhaps if you had been sitting and watching you could have seen the smiles between the two. Obviously, Rachel, was being facetious and not expecting a reply, however, the subsequent reply from Rachel pretty well showed she did not expect an answer. "Very discreet. Well done."
Journalists and commentators ask a lot of "inappropriate" questions, perhaps because the public is always salivating for the salacious newsbit. At least no one can fault Rachel for not asking.
Hey larry! your a bigot, can't get you off the race train fast enough!!!
Well Lawrence, you must have a special source as friends and family say she is not, and she does not comment on her sexuality. Maybe you should worry less about what folks do in the bedroom. God only knows what justice Thomas does there, and frankly, I could care less. What he talks about with his wife has far more impact on our lives and this country.
Two points FOR EVERYONE…
1. EVERYONE should have a gay sibling in order to discover that they are just as human and valuable as those who are "straight!"
2. If we were as critical of the personality idiosyncracies of (so-called) "straight" citizens we would discover all the SAME weaknesses and bad "habits" we enjoying pointing out when discussing gays.
Kudos, NaplesMuse. If you aren't fortunate enough to have a LGBT sibling, you should at least have some friends that are. I have been lucky enough to have a few friends that have been creative, intelligent, wonderful friends and exemplary people that were also LGBT. Their sexual orientation was the least of their assets, but I am sure it helped them to be the people they were.
Maybe it was because they were more sympathetic towards others who had to deal with discrimination, but they were true pleasures to know and to open my mind.
Beyond that I like sNewt's sister a whole lot more that I like him. She is a treasure. It is too bad that he is so ugly that he can't enjoy how lucky he is.
Isn't Cheney's daughter gay? You'd think it would make these people more understanding, but NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. :(
Cheney, I don't think, actually cares about gay marriage. Remember there was that big controversy in which someone asked him about his daughter and he immediately backed down and said that we were all human and we all deserve the same treatment? And the fundamentalists went CRAZY about it and he was bashed for DAYS on Fox News? In Cheney's case I think it actually does and has humbled him. If I had to guess it's the same w/ Liz Cheney too.
Candace said something in the interview to the effective of "I don't know if [Newt] believes these things because that's his honest belief or because he thinks it'd get him elected to public office. Frankly I don't like either of those."
Cheney, Gingrich- I don't believe a word either of them says. They both have black hearts. They are both political animals of the worst sort.
Ok, yes I'm showing my prejudice against them here but their track records about social issues stink.
Yes.
Except that you shouldn't have to be related to a kind of person to know that they are still a person.
nesumme- exactly. When churches run around saying things like if it is ok for gays to marry then next people will want to marry goats, well that kind of illogical thinking equates gays with farm animals.
I think that's correct. I think this is probably one of the few subjects where Cheney is sort of on the right side of an issue. Anybody who strongly doubts that should probably google "dick cheney lesbian daughter".
It's often said that root of bigotry is ignorance. That's only partly true. I think it's true in Cheney's case. Having a lesbian daughter gave him an education. Both Newt Gingrich and Christine O'Donnell have lesbian sisters and neither of them have learned a damned thing. That's because bigotry has a second root, and that is unreasoning fear.
"Yes. Yes, absolutely we invited he and Callista." We invited him and Callista. Get some remedial education!
I'm sure that whenever you are interviewed, your spoken English is always grammatically perfect.
Crawl out from under your rock, Jason. You couldn't find anything more damning?
Too bad.
Actually Jason, it's "We invited Callista and him." not the other way around. Someone else should take some remedial English education as well.
Lawrence, you'll just have to wait a little longer, as it's clear you want a Lesbian as the Dem front runner in 2012 over reelecting Mr. Obama. But in the mean time, maybe you can work on the Kagan for President Campaign. Then in November of next year, you might get your wish. I admire your early enthusiasm! Good luck with that!
I don't have an issue with the LGBT community - what they do in the privacy of their house is their business as long as it doesn't harm me and mine!! My issue is that there are far too many that want to "define" someone based on their "bedroom", and the hypocrisy that they too have LGBT family that they choose NOT to recognize - yet are willing to "demonize" the LGBT community!
Having said that, please note the following people: John Wayne Gacy, Ed Gein, Ted Bundy, David Berkowitz, Jeffery Dahmer, et. al - all have in common - they were all serial killers - raised by "traditional" heterosexual marriages! So the next time someone says that "traditional marriage" (1 man + 1 woman) is the best for "the family" - just start listing off the names of those "traditional marriage" raised serial killers, and ask them how's that working out!! Poor Candace, to have Newt for a sibling - that's the real shame!
I did not get the impression the Candace agrees with your opinion and I think she would be best qualified in this area.
The serial killers you mention...wow...Dahmer, child of broken home, Ed Gein raised by dominant single mother...all had highly dysfunctional families...again the family depends on nurturing and a solid environment...whether gay or straight...
single parent, or divorced...
Zora Renee, exactly what kind of harm could an LGBT do to harm you and yours that a heterosexual wouldn't do? I'm confused about your tolerance being conditioned on a guarantee of not being harmed, do you require the same guarantee of catholics, jews, muslims, protestants, athiests, republicans, democrats, police officers, firemen...etc, etc. As far as I know it is straight society that has "define" someone based on their "bedroom", someday Americans will get over our paranoia about sexuality, but its gonna take a while, after all our earliest founders (Jamestown and Plymouth) were not free thinkers.
I think you've interpreted me wrongly when I said "harm me" - I feel the same way about "heterosexuals too! I try to treat everyone the same way that I'd like to be treated - I'm intolerant of ignorance/bigots/and believers of unreality - other than that I'm good....Yes, it would be lovely if everyone stopped using labels and just "saw each others humanity" - but right now, we aren't there yet as a species!!

bummer.....
I always miss those too, however, I have to presume that TRMS is keeping me from having another screaming fit over the ugliness hanging around inside some sick heads.
You can extrapolate via my comment... spouting nonsense about a female supreme court judge.
I find it a little crazy...most Americans don't care one way or another if a person is gay...and most politicians...Cheney and his lesbian daughter, etc...have family that is gay, and privatley appear to support them...so why on earth do they pander to a small, radical, religious group??? Seems silly to me.
Go to a state like South Carolina, and you'll find most people oppose gay people.
I don't know how you can conclude that most Americans don't care when gay marriage has been banned by popular vote in over 30 states. The people who most oppose gay rights also happen to be dependable voters.
lawrence bourne banned, antigay slurs everywhere, miserable comment history.
Thank you, tyler. I appreciate you (though you didn't do it for me) keeping me from increasing my sorrow, disgust and anger toward people who have to demean others, just to make themselves feel a little more something.
My deepest appreciation.
"The worst are full of passionate intensity." (W.B. Yates)
Of course, some recent polls do show majority support for the idea of marriage equality? But where are they when the subject comes up for a vote? Never mind that we shouldn't even be voting on rights at all. Fear and hatred are fantastic motivators. Doing the right thing? Meh. Can't be bothered.
I have known Gay and Lesbian couples that have been together for decades - this despite discrimination, threat of violence, etc. Through it all they have found the way to love themselves, each other, their friends and family. To laugh and find joy in everyday living. I've known couples who are activists and put themselves on the line for a better future for all people. Sometimes I feel that the straight people are afraid that Gay and Lesbian people will outshine them when it comes to mirroring "family values" if they are allowed to a recognized, legal marriage. IMHO, Gay and Lesbian people already exhibit these traits and live them courageously and well. But then, being a dyke, my opinion is a bit biased :).
"I see evil around me everyday" Well then Newt, you have too many mirrors.
Are we sure that wasn't Larry King???
My sister is gay and has been in a relationship with a woman who has two kids from a previous relationship.
I've interacted with these kids and cannot find ONE thing that would seem to be a problem from being raised by two women. As far as I know, they're not bullied at school either. Granted, they are in 1st grade(boy) and 3rd grade(girl).
I live in small-town Tennessee.
I wonder if voters in Iowa and across the nation have given much thought to Callista Gingrich as the wife of a President should Newt be elected. I guess she would still become the First Lady of the United States but would remain the third Lady for Newt and his second home wrecking slut. It could be a little bit awkward when an impressionable schoolgirl asks Callista how she and President Gingrich met, fell in love and got married. A candid response would be (Callistsa): "It was easy, I just seduced him, and banged his brains out until he agreed to dump his wife and marry me".
