Scoville heat scale for pepper
Pepper spray is 2-5x hotter than ghost peppers

You misspelled "chili" in the Scoville Chili Heat Chart." Chile is a country, not a pepper.
Sorry, Pim K
Chile Scoville Heat Scale

CHILE seems to be it OK... sweet dreams...
I once sprayed a very small amount of pepper spray in a car, with the doors open. and just in the air. not in my eyes. Just darn luckly the car was not moving. Messed me up for over an hour. Sprayed right in the face ? These kids are tougher than me.
And what about the 80 some year old woman in Washington state? I can't even imagine...
Navy SEALS fear her!
Please stay after this issue. Who decides polices regarding proper crowd control procedures for the police? After viewing videos of the tactics being used against non-violent protesters, I want to call these police officers jackboots. It would appear that they are acting punitively with violence toward peaceful protesters. Are they accountable for this behavior? If not who is, the policymakers? I'd like to think that the police are doing a difficult job, but "callin' it your job don't make it right Boss". These procedures must change either by the courts, the legislature or executive order. Thank you for keeping this in the public eye.
http://thinkprogress.org/special/2011/11/22/374237/fox-news-host-dismisses-pepper-spray-attack-by-cops-its-essentially-a-food-product-right/
I linked to this in another topic, but it's worth putting here as well but to highlight the part where it's said that we don't have the right to "Monday-morning quarterback the police." Actually, we not only have the right, we have the responsibility to question and challenge what the police do.
Everyone hates public union labor until they are pepperspraying 80 yr olds and pregnant women. Then they deserve our support. The second the batons come out, everyone on Fox News wants a police state.
There are always people who give the police the benefit of the doubt, even in those case where they clearly don't deserve it. But Fox really takes the biscuit. I especially liked (not) the assertion that pepper spray is basically a food product. Sure, it's derived from food, but so is mustard gas.
There is a petition for Gretchen Carlson to take a point blank blast in the face like the students did so she can tell us how it tastes.
I thought it was Megyn Kelly.
Aye, problably right. They all look alike to me.
Please continue to follow this story. So now we know that OC is being used by police to force protesters into compliance. We can see multiple cases that show the victims of the pepper spay were nonviolent. There seem to be conflicting polices regarding the use of OC. Who is responsible for these policies? Were the police officers doing a difficult job in the fashion that they were trained. Or Did these officers punish protesters violently out of their frustration? To quote Lucas Jackson,"callin' it your job don't make it right, Boss". Through the courts, the legislature or executive order this type of bootjack thuggery must end as it is a serious threat to free speech.
Finally executive order 756 from the Chancellor of Cal State provides an example of proscribed use of OC on some of California's college campuses. While it doesn't cover UC campuses a careful reading provides an insight into the concerns of college administrators with regard to the use of weapons by police on campus.

Thank you Ms Maddow and stay after them
Hi Rachel,
I have some information regarding the "pepper spray" used on the students...
http://www.defense-technology.com/products.aspx?pid=56795
The level of intensity can be adjusted from 0.2 to 1.3%
~ from very very bad to horribly (violently) worse!
Also, the "tactical employment" is generally for a distance of 10 to 20 feet or more.
Not a point-blank drenching, as we saw was used... In effect, the students were sprayed in such a way as one might say, not with a spray, but a tsunami of this product. And, why? The most important question: Why?
Many Thanks for Everything,
Peter
Just a random note here I know but, Bad Lip Reading made a hilarious Paul montage, you have to go check it out! (Also, I'm not a Paul supporter, I just think it's funny)!
UC Davis here, Lauren ### Violation of Human Rights.
Police hate crimes, paid for by the victims.
fulgour, concern troll elsewhere.
...remember, we saw "Officer Pike" talking on his cellphone (for authorisation to proceed from his Captain, we may assume) and then fixing the setting on his "Delivery System" (and shaking the canister) before standing directly over his victims... and then criminally assaulting them...
You can always find some numb ace to do the job , if you order it enough times.
China couldn’t at first find anyone with whatever it takes to forcibly clear the peaceful Tiananmen Square Sit-In.
Many were college students. All they wanted was the right to choose their own Occupation in life. That was it. The paper Statue of Miss liberty ?? Maybe they were hoping America could help. We were , we got them lobs , all the ones we used to do.
In the middle of the massacre, a near by hospital was said to have had most of half an inch of solid blood filling the ER floor.

If someone is allowed to order it enough times ,
Sooner or later , some idiot will follow it.
Tiananmen Square was a calculated military "hit" allowed (sanctioned) by the higher ups, and purely political... the protesters were wrapping it up and going home, end of summer holidays over. But the government did not want to miss an "opportunity" to make a show of strength.
Occupy Wall Street is going to be going on for years... the USA ain't China. We are witnessing a new wave of Democracy in action, not the gangland violence of totalitarianism.
That is to say, not the gangland violence of totaltarianism by the PROTESTERS. "Big Brother" may be something else altogether...

America has been completely turned upsidedown, citizens united said that money is speech unequivocally. Money has the power to speak! People in
the streets are being brutally attacked and shut down all across America! Is that freedom of speech? What is going on in our country? Freedom of
speech is the cornerstone of American democracy yet speech is being stifled, the redress of grievances is being stifled on our streets right now!
The most perverse thing about this situation is at the same time our laws have opened the floodgates for wealthy scum, international conglomerate
scum, to control our country! There are very few corporations in America that are owned by only Americans, this means these new super packs that
are getting tons of money from companies with foreign stockholders such as the prince's in Saudi Arabia or any other country for that matter are
choosing our elected representatives more then we are through constant and unrelenting propaganda that pits us against each other. The truth is they don't care about the American people they don't live here they don't do nothing here but make money, and they are helping
choose our elected leaders should we be allowing the situation to continue money is not speech! People are speech! Corporations are not people!
The people that are controlling us are not from here this is the most disturbing thing going on in America today and people are so busy worrying
about petty partisan things because there are people inciting this battle against democrats as though there bad people when i meet a hardcore righty they don't know i'm a democrat, i'm no differnt from them no amount that matters. Yet saying i am a dem. could end a friendship with some. They have been pumped to their eyebrows with hate & nonsense like were godless heathens. I find this astounding that these people could be led to believe their fellow man that works as hard, cares as deeply for family, dies as bravely for country, aren't true americans in some twisted way. The hate-filled propaganda is leading them! I'm bad & blind in their eyes because i'm not religious, yet the greed they display toward poor is contradicts theirs beliefs to the point of Hippocracy. The god they praise would tell them to love there enemy, help the sick & poor. Don't they see the true evil, as they say the root of all evil "money". all money is now rooted in wallstreet literally! Without FOX they'd be locked arms with the rest of us. I'm not religious but even i'm willing to say God Help Us"
As long as Americans fight each other we will never win, Americans pitted against Americans over the scraps as the wealthy divide up our world! I
hope Americans take advantage of this 99% movement before the propaganda pit's everybody against it, and tries shutting down before they even
now what it's really about. It's about all of us! Something is wrong in America wake up guys!
Forcibly painting peaceful protesters in the face with pepper spray at point blank range constitutes "cruel and unusual punishment".
If the protesters were throwing things at others, vandalizing, or otherwise threatening public safety, it would be reasonable for police to have pepper spray on hand as a means of dissipating violence. But to spray it in the faces of seated citizens who are peacefully assembling is a clear and criminal abuse of power. This fear-bred, retaliatory behavior by law enforcement is not acceptable. Pepper spray should only be used as a last resort, and certainly not as an instinctive response to peaceful assembly.
Thank you for keeping an eye on this issue.
Chris, about your tweet.
The thing is that the 1% are doing fabulously well when the 99% are not buying things. Your assumption is that when the American middle class goes down, so do the fortunes of the 1%. That is simply the "we are all in this both together" fallacy. It's wrong. What is the source of wealth in Romney's company? He is getting efficiencies- and how does he achieve them? He is cannibalizing the American middle class. Basically ripping up companies, and automating and off-shoring. What this does is reduce operating expenses, by reducing expensive american labor. The paper company is closed in Indiana, and Office Max gets its paper products manufactured in China instead.
And what happens when the workers who used to be paid a decent middle class income in such factories no longer have enough money to buy products at the small businesses that buy products at Office Max? Well, that ripple effect will require decades to play out, and by that time the Romney "efficiency managers" will have cashed out.
So am I saying that long term the 1% are screwed, and they are just being short sighted? Not at all. Long term, their prospects are very good.
If there are no profits in America, there are profits from valuations of Chinese companies. The thing is, they don't care, and they don't have to care. The system says it is perfectly satisfactory for them to chase profit whatever the source. America's problems used to be the 1%'s problems. What was good for laissez faire capitalism was good for America. There is nothing that says the goals of two abstract systems always have to be coincident. It has historically been the case, but today, it is no longer the case. In the age of global finance, if the 1% profits can profit from America's decline, it will. The global trends are the ascendancy of China and India, so that is where the huge profits are. That is the anchor to hang around Romney's neck, because it is hanging on ours.
America's problem is that the Consumption River is being pumped dry. There is some good research about this going on at MIT. I summarized some of the ideas here. In Boomerang, Lewis pointed out how the pressure of the tax base squeeze in California is initiating a death spiral - as it curtails expenditure on investing in public services like education. The thing is, reducing the costs of for those pepper sprayed students at UC Davis will be no use if there aren't enough jobs for them.
Structurally, companies like Twitter can serve 200 million customers with 300 workers. That is a huge huge problem we have to address.
Yes, I finding it difficult to add, answer, or respond, except for yes John you are correct.
Except for one thing I have always pointed out is that there are over 1.3 billion people in China. 90 or so million living in modern city's with what we may consider lower middle, to middle class lives [and a few upper middle]. The other 1.2 or so billion are still living in poverty, which Hu Jintao wants to change [and why not].
China's population is 1,339,724,852 their GDP about 5.878257 trillion US dollars Americas population is 312,370,000 our GDP about 7.510227 trillion a big difference. And will be painful for us if that gap is to close.
So it only shows not only how much greater the market, but the workforce who would be willing to work for so much less. Then there is India, Indonesia, Pakistan, and so on. Also consider computers and other automation, plus we are a world economy. I am not sure how to explain this with out some spreadsheet presentation, but with what I have highlighted try to figure out what I am getting at.
Ed Schultz suggested everyone buy American, some of the folk on his site suggested sites that showed what is made and the manufacturers in the USA. Some makers of leather jackets, luggage, work cloths and stuff. But not many small ticket items we would often purchase or want at Wall Mart. And a lot of the stuff very expensive in comparison to the imports.
Oh then there is the worlds wealthiest 16% of nations using 80% of the worlds resources. If China, India and the like want what we in the industrial west got. We will need at least 4 more planet earths.
OK that's 3 more things I added.
There are some important issues we face as a human species and a lesson can be learned from the past which is from the war scrolls. In these scrolls, it talks about people being consumed in greed in which they become sons of darkness. In this situation, there is also the sons of light which stop these people from causing utter destruction, because they are so lost in their darkness they cannot see the light of day. In current times, we see again a senseless repeating of history that we fall into where certain people become corrupt, greedy, arrogant, hypocrites, power craving and deceivers. But the one important issue today is we can no longer allow these types of people to continue this destructive path and if we do not break this repeating pattern of history, we could end up leaving the earth as a waste land with no hope for a better future. We must learn to recognize these repeating patterns and put a stop to them once and for all so people can always have that better future of hope. Our own country has fallen victim to this and we best becareful to make the right decisions as we have many issues to resolve with Global Warming, corrupt political officials represented as the Republicans right now that would destroy what America stands for, an economic crisis Republicans caused, the lowering of peoples better living standards, wanton abuse to the environment, the removal of our rights, etc. Are we destined to repeat history or will we as Americans make those better decisions and choices for a better world.
War scrolls? What do you mean.
Deb is referring to The War Scroll, one of the sectarian texts found among the Dead Sea Scrolls. There was more than one copy, so the Essenes (if that's who they were) must have valued it somewhat highly. On the literal face of it, it describes a long war between Israel and the rest of the world, but metaphorically it is concerned with the conflict between light and darkness, good and evil. You can find the composite, but still fragmentary text in Geza Vermes' The Complete Dead Sea Scrolls in English, if you're interested.
It's applicability to modern American politics is, I think, doubtful at best.

The first Martyr of the Occupy Movement. This is no joke.
Here's another sick irony to this incident. Suppose some sort of "personhood" law had been in effect. Who would be charged with murder in this? The cop who shot the woman with pepper spray, or the woman for being in the way?
It's not a baby, it's an organ. Much like losing an eye. A tragedy? No. Unfortunate? Yes.
The baby was wanted. That makes it a crime.
