The Rachel Maddow Show turns three today. We spent a little time today talking about segments we've loved working on -- below and after the jump, a few favorites as picked by the producers who worked on them.
Happy birthday, us and you. You're a big part of what makes this so much fun.
Bill Wolff: The football election metaphor.
Rebekah Dryden: The John Birch Society paranoid blues.
Mike Yarvitz: BP oil spill is 1979 all over again.
Kent Jones: A visit to the poop expert.
Will Femia: Rachel gets a lightsaber.
Me: Catherine Ferguson Academy on the block.
Tricia McKinney: 3D TV.
And a Yarvitz bonus: What went wrong with Reaganomics.

Happy anniversary Rachel
Keep up the great work
My favorite moment on TRMS? "Dude! I'm reading from your book!"
Agreed
Ah, to pick a favorite moment.
"I didn't lie. Back off." FTW. I went around showing people a YouTube clip of that particular badassity for days.
Happy honorable mentions (in no particular order) have to be:
And a few serious honorable mentions are:
Happy birthday TRMS. My but you've grown! :)
Please, all of you on this stellar team, never stop reaching for the best and challenging us as viewers. And also please, never let Rachel lose her tinfoil hats. It's humor that makes the rest of it bearable.
Thanks for the memories thus far. Looking forward to countless more moments.
Hey Michele.A., that's a good list. Can you give the links to those segments or at least the approx dates, I'm sure about a couple but not the rest.
Hmmm. I can try. Let me look into it later tonight and get back to you. Or perhaps Will or Synergy3k could help? Do y'all have this sort of stuff at your fingertips?
Hi Michele A. - If you get a moment tonight, I'd love to know in which segment "I didn't lie. Back off" is in. Thank you!
Michele A.- Think this is the clip (from Afghanistan) you're thinking of:
"Hot in Kandahar"
http://maddowblog.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2010/07/06/4623601-hot-in-kandahar
Thank you for that Afghanistan tip, both Michel and Beth. I must have missed that one when it originally aired. Enlightening perspective!
Dutchie6: I didn't get to it last night, but here are (approx?) dates and links, per your request, in the order I mentioned them:
Seriously, I need to make shorter off-the-top-of-my-head lists of moments, because they take entirely too long to find when the only concrete detail I can remember is, "Hey, that thing happened once, too." :)
While I'm clip-mining, let me just debunk now any trolls who are gearing up to say Rachel has "just now" "jumped on" the "Obama infrastructure bandwagon" because of the speech last night. If anything, Obama may have finally started listening to HER:
Happy first Friday of your 4th year, TRMS!
@Michele, I like your list. ;)
Thanks, mb. I liked your contribution below as well.
I may have documented my favorite highlights from this year in a comic for the staff: http://jesidres.tumblr.com/post/9943187254/for-maddow-willatwork-synergy3k
(Please don't kill me... I love you guys!)
Also, here is some music to accompany your "John Birch" piece. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pG6taS9R1KM Enjoy!
Happy Anniversary !!!!!!!!
its been a good three years look forward to many more.
I remember when it just started. Seems like yesterday.
Happy Birthday TRMS!! I have been a faithful watcher for 2 years, you brighten my day!!!!! Keep it coming!!
Which was Rachel's favorite? Or do we get to see that tonight?
Rachel always says the lightsaber one is her favorite.
The bird HAS to be one of her favs too..
Rachel, I'd love you even if you were a man.
This one will always be my favorite silly clip: Shagged by a rare parrot! http: //www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26315908/vp/33148607#33148607
This was Bill's other pic. Thanks for help finding those clips, btw.
Any time :)
My obsession with this clip was such that my friends actually made me a birthday card with a kakapo on it... (http://imgur.com/hsNZ7)
The text inside? "We wanted to express our love kakapo style... but we were worried about your personal space issues." Genius.
Congrats on the birthday from Britain - I will now return to lurking :)
Keep up the great work TRMS!
Congrats! Two of my TRMS segment faves are:
Following Liz Cheney's terror logic gets Maddow "arrested"

Rachel Re: The Hard Choice in Afghanistan

I also liked the Darpa/Maddow 'Red Dot' challenge.
Happy Anniversary!
I also enjoy the farcical arrest segment. Why is it that O Fortuna level hyperbole never gets old?
So what's the Rachel Maddow Show anniversary cocktail?
Three already? Seems like yesterday I was "Ask(ing) Dr. Maddow" a question on the radio. Has it actually been almost 2 years since I "stalked" her and Bill Wolff in NOLA (along with the fabulous Melissa Harris Perry)? Wow. Happy Birthday, TRMS. Glad you're there!
The best commentator out there. A spoonful of sugar makes the medicine go down in the most painless way. THANKS!!!
Thanks for the inside poop. Jim Mead is a great ambassador for science; paleontology and climate change. My fossil dino poop is much older, but still very cool.

And like you I work with best; in this case Karen Chin; the Dino-Dung lady.
I can't remember if this was on TRMS or during a Rachel appearance on the Daily Show, but my favorite Maddowism is "Don't lie and don't threaten to shoot people."
"Dissent is not the aberration in a democracy. Dissent is the norm. Our political vitality depends on dissent. No one expects that the president is going to have the whole country agree with his options and his priorities. Nobody expects Americans to share the same political opinions. But has there ever been a time when we shared so few political facts?
... Let’s argue. Let’s have the great American debate about the role of government and the best policies for the country. It’s fun. It’s citizenship. It’s activism. It makes the country better when we have those debates. And your country needs you. It needs all of us. But two things disqualify you from this process: You can’t threaten to shoot people and you have to stop making stuff up."
- Dr. Rachel Maddow on April 2, 2010 during her 'bull-pucky' segment on The Rachel Maddow Show
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26315908//vp/36155851#36155851
This segment is such a fav of mine that it is on my FB page under favourite quotations.
Happy 3rd TRMS and many more!
We love your show and the way you stay classy and intelligent amid all the nuts and liars is awesome. You make us laugh and replay what you say all the time..."Dude! I'm reading from your book!" We see you try not to face palm and you step back and jsut laugh at all the bizarro world stuff they do.
"I didn't lie. Back off." Snicker. "Facts matter."
But you speak intelligently and humorously, and we wish you happy anniversary...many more!!!!
my fav Maddow moment was when Rachel outed herself as a lesbian vampire with that hilarious video
.abovetopsecret.com/forum/thread612171/pg1
Three years old and already more integrity and honesty than all of FOX's lineup put together. Too many favorite moments to list but right off the top of my head the lightsaber clip, garnish-eating rant, lesbian vampire clip, and kakapo moment are ones I will cherish always. Even when I finally snap over politics and go live in a cave, I'll still re-emerge to watch Rachel Maddow and have her put it all into perspective.
Rachel is an amazing host and I'm glad she enjoys doing it because I would gladly watch her for the next 50 years.
Happy 3 TRMS!
Hey, I tune in whenever I can, the radio show was always so entertaining and the Teevee show is much better than some of the others. Some fresh perspectives and then those stories that are "required". You all make it worth watching with the research and new angles.
Appreciate all your effort and hard work! THANKS!
Happy 3rd birthday TRMS! you guys have done an exceptional job covering some of the best and worst news stories out there. well done. hopeful to many more years to come! :p
Also my favorite moment from TRMS which there are a lot of them but I got to go with the bird shagging one where rachel was cracking up over the guy literally being shagged by the that rare bird. it was so funny! lol...
Well, a day late, but congrats all the same! So many great moments. Hey, btw, where is Kent Jones these days? Funny guy.
I didn't discover TRMS until this year. Now, you and Diane Sawyer are the only news I watch. Thanks for making the news tolerable!
I didn't discover TRMS until this year. So much time lost. If it weren't for you and Diane Sawyer I don't think I would watch any news. Keep up the great work!!
