Tonight's guests:
- E.J. Dionne, columnist for the Washington Post, senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, and a professor at Georgetown University
- Dr. Thomas Shapiro, the Pokross Professor of Law and Social Policy at Brandeis University, and director of Brandeis' Institute on Assets and Social Policy
- Mordecai Lee, professor of Government Affairs at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and a former member of the Wisconsin State Assembly and the Wisconsin State Senate
Here's executive producer Bill Wolff with the stories we're looking at tonight (with guest host Melissa Harris-Perry).

I have given up on msnbc for being just like fox. Any plan on talking about Pat Buchanan or is he off limits as an employee?
Wouldn't Pat feel better hosting on Fake News?
The Khan Academy's got a video out on the debt ceiling.

......... ........ ............KHHHAAANN!!!!
I *LOVE* me some Melissa Harris-Perry. I cheered like the Women's U.S. soccer team just won the world cup when I heard the news that she's guest hosting tonight. Can't wait!
Ditto, Ditto and DITTO!
I love her too. I was totally enthralled by what she is saying. She uses facts and historical illustrations to justify her reasoning. I wish I had instructors like her in College. I can only imagine what kind of instructor she is. She has to be really good at her job. She is one most intelligent and interesting news personalities I have seen. I hope she continues.
That's what I came here to say, too!! ;-) yum
The way she made connections between race and class in practically every segment of the show last night was bloody effing brilliant.
I don't think I have ever seen such clear, contextual and astute analysis on the way those issues intersect with policy and politics on the TV machine before.
Time to give her her own show.
Me too. Just feels like a plus, having her around.
Oh, MHP looking good in the Captain's Ready Room.
(Is there still a small stash of liquor on the floor behind the chair?)
Melissa, don't worry. You are going to do just fine. If Lambchop can pull this off, you can too - no offense to Lambchop. We are a hip crowd, you are going to be alright.
Don't get me wrong - I LOVE Melissa Harris-Perry (and for that matter - Rachel Maddow), but why do all the guest hosts on MSNBC "sound" like the vacationing host (like key phrases and timing)? I want to hear HER voice and personal spin on things because I think she's great when she's speaking "off the cuff" - let Melissa Harris-Perry be Melissa Harris-Perry!!
Loved Melissa Harris-Perry on Bill Maher. This should be fun.
Where's Rachel? When will she be back?
MHP is terrible. Will Rachel be back tomorrow night?
We welcome all viewpoints... but so far I would say you are in the smallest possible minority regarding MHP's guest hosting gig. You are one. The rest of the comments are overwhelmingly positive.
MHP has a perspective that is as unique as Rachel's.
Always intelligent and informed and often suprising.
If by "terrible" you mean that Melissa Harris-Perry sounds better unscripted, then I agree. Her delivery--in which she totally betrayed her prof-iness, lolz!--was the issue, not content: I thought the analogy of same-sex couples and firearms across statelines quite good. As far as guest-hosting goes, when Bill Wolff hosted the show near the end of last year it was dreadful. Of course I'm used to him improvising on the blog's video previews, just as I'm used to Melissa Harris-Perry conversing with Rachel or debating with co-panelists. It has nothing to do with Melissa Harris-Perry or Bill Wolff. Rachel just does a better job of extemporizing while reading from a teleprompter, which is certainly a consequence of sitting in front of one on a near-nightly basis.
The person filling in for Maddow right now.
IS AN EXCELLENT CHOICE.
I cannot change the channel it is number 356 here in Maine.
enough airports.... bring her back
Melissa Harris-Perry is FABULOUS! FANTASTIC! She presents the progressive agenda in a calm, sane, professional manner. Rachel has gotten way too sarcastic, snarky and smart-alecky, too many gimmicks. Makes her way to easy for Fox News et al. to ridicule. MHP is a marvelously refreshing difference from not only Rachel, but also from Lawrence O'Donnell and Ed Schultz as well. Rachel, Lawrence and Ed should take a lesson from Melissa. Or maybe Melissa should be the headliner! Melissa is someone an independent or even a moderate Republican could watch without gettin PO'd at the biased slant. With only a tiny bit more polish, Melissa could reign supreme.
Peter is absolutely right. Melissa Harris-Perry is terrific! Intelligent, calm, classy and she's not SCREAMING at us. How cool is that? Great choice, MSNBC! On a scale of 1 - 10, she's a 12 (forget about the "tiny bit more polish" - she is fine just the way she is. She is totally comfortable with who she is and that is far better than any ole polish. Great show tonight - well done, Melissa!
The only "polish" MHP needs is on the simple mechanics of putting on the show. There were one or two small hiccups. But her exquisitely professional, calm, serious manner is such a relief from the snide, dismissive tone that so many MSNBC commentators have adopted. Of course, I agree with (almost) everything Rachel, Lawrence and Ed say, but the way they say it is sometimes so grating that I switch the channel to cop show reruns. Melissa did slightly stray into snarky-land, but for almost all of her broadcast, she was so much more ... Cronkitey?
I liked her 100% better than Sharpton. I hope they give her the 6pm slot rather than waste it on that useless bag of wind.
I can clap to this.
Or better yet, they can kill that 7pm re-airing of Chris Matthews and put Melissa in that slot...
I really like MHP...but Please, NO. I need an hour for
dinner during the evening!
You mean of the ones who have commented. "The rest" are three or four that are positive. # 8 is asking when Rachel will be back.
Check the show's ratings. They might be in the toilet.
You may wish to check the maddow twitter stream. Lots of positive comments.
# 8 has simply missed the multiple posts indicating Maddow is on vacation.
HOW CAN we CUT SPENDING IN THE FACE OF A GROWING POPULATION AND RISING PRICES??
In economics, inflation is a rise in the general level of prices of goods and services in an economy over a period of time.[1] When the general price level rises, each unit of currency buys fewer goods and services. Consequently, inflation also reflects an erosion in the purchasing power of money – a loss of real value in the internal medium of exchange and unit of account in the economy.[2][3] A chief measure of price inflation is the inflation rate, the annualized percentage change in a general price index (normally the Consumer Price Index) over time.[4]
In 1790, the year of the first census of the U.S.A. population, there were 3,929,214 Americans. By 1900, the U.S.A. population jumped to 75,994,575. In 1920 the census counted more than a hundred million people (105,710,620). Another 100 million people were added to the United States population in just fifty years when the two hundred million barrier was reached in 1970 with 203,302,031 counted in the census.
P.S. Is that E.J. Dionne? Wow , keeper
I agree. It doesn't even make sense to cut government when the population grows. By the very definition, government must grow as population grows. Its called representation.
Is it just me or is anybody else having trouble downloading new podcasts of TRMS? Neither the video or audio versions have updated in iTunes since July 21. I'm jonesing, man!
There hasn't been a new TRMS since Thursday, July 21. Tonight is the first new show since then. So, no new shows = no new podcasts.
Is it just me or is anybody else unable to download new podcasts of TRMS. It hasn't updated in iTunes since July 21. I don't get MSNBC in my cable package and can't watch episodes on my laptop because my speakers are wimpy, so the podcast was all I had. I'm jonesing, man! Please fix!
There hasn't been a new podcast since the 21st because there hasn't been a TRMS episode (if that's the right word--sounds like some kind of seizure) until tonight.
Eh sorry for the double post. I didn't know the first one went through.
Melissa Haris Perry is eloquent, intelligent and insightful.
And, I hope Rachel is enjoying her time off... happy vaca !
OMG....let me join the chorus of voices praising Melissa Harris-Perry! She is A-MA-ZING! Personally, I'd love to see her at the 6 pm hour....she definitely deserves her own show!
Its all survival of the fittest. There are many black and brown families that have come from poverty and worked their way to being affluent through nothing but their own hard work. It is simple, those that posses the traits necessarily to better themselves will and those that do not will not. Their poverty is their own fault and to say otherwise devalues the hard work that successful Latinos and African Americans perform. No one forces them to not get their education and work hard.
Neat trick when public education is being gutted as it has been since Reagan.
Fallacy: some black and brown families have come from povery and are now affluent. Therefore, it was bound to happen. Those that did not do well... they clearly did not possess the superior genetic characteristics required to "make it". Seriously? Bigotry, poverty, crime had nothing to do with it?
Fallacy: "Their poverty is their own fault" Really? These people deserve poverty? Something is true: therefore it is morally right? What about the higher death rates in impoverished areas, do they purify the genetic pool?
You make a scary argument. Darwin argued that sympathy was an important genetic attribute, one that made survival of a species more likely. Why don't you try to find some?
Social Darwinisn. Nasty nasty social darwinism. The only form of Darwinism that evangelicals feel comfortable ascribing to. So much for "as you do it for the least of them..."
Nice post Tyler, you couldn't be more right.
Whoever selected Melissa Harris-Perry for guest host DESERVES a raise or a bonus or both.
Finally, we get the complete package: intelligent, articulate, calm, cool and professional. And, she's not SCREAMING at us! Princeton's loss is MSNBC's gain.
I enjoyed every moment of tonight's quite informative show. Great job, Melissa. Hope to see much, much more of you.
.
Can't help adding my voice to the MHP fan club, as if I wasn't already a charter member! An absolutely stellar debut, and worthy of an encore at the very least. Nice to know Rachel has a VERY capable second to fill the void when necessary.
MHP & CH (Mr. Lambchops) are good but Rachel is tops. Happy vacation! Fishing again?? :D
Bravo MHP, ENCORE!!!!
It's too bad Rachel's on holiday. I can't wait to hear her on-air reaction to this gem, reported by Right Wing Watch:
http://www.rightwingwatch.org/content/bachmann-ally-bradlee-dean-sues-rachel-maddow-50-million. Kind of takes "don't twist my words by repeating them verbatim" to a whole new level.
Melissa Harris-Perry was excellent!! I liked her. Smart, articulate. My favorite story was the one that went after the (to me) maddening metaphor of "Government as Family". Thanks Melissa for hitting that myth / metaphor for the lie that it is. I hope I see more of Ms. Perry. She is just great.
