Bradlee Dean is an anti-Islam Minnesota preacher, a radio host, an advocate of jailing gay people, a heavy metal drummer and, I think, the guy you're supposed to see in the avatar to the right. And now, he has also been the Minnesota State House chaplain of the day.
The Minnesota Independent posts the Reverend Dean's prayer -- video's below -- and reports:
Dean said during his prayer, "I know this is a nondenominational chamber," he said listing off a litany of Christian denominations and leaving off any mention of Judaism.
Then he took a dig at President Obama, insinuating that he is not a Christian. "The head of the denomination is Jesus as every president up until 2008 has acknowledged, in Jesus name."
Republican House Speaker Kurt Zellers apologized for allowing Reverend Dean to give the prayer. "That type of person will never ever be allowed on this House floor again as long as I have the honor of serving as speaker," Mr. Zellers said.
Bradlee Dean has long been associated with conservative politicians in Minnesota, including Representative Michele Bachmann.

Well Thank you for closing the door to the barn, but sadly you let the animals out before hand.
but you still get kudos for being a Republican and not a Republiecant.
After the horses have already eaten the children.
WOW, a Republican who admits that he made a mistake letting a radical babble nonsense. That's a first step, hopefully.
Oh, don't let his statement today fool you, Golferdawn... Speaker Zellars will hold a vote today to put an anti-gay marriage amendment on the 2012 ballot in Minnesota. The narrow-mindedness of the GOP continues.
Well, at least the repubs found yet another way to make sure they avoided dealing with the budget deficit created by their man TPaw. I'm sure they'll still find a way to blame dems for the fact that they missed the deadline for a budget, anything but fess up to the fact that they were concentrating on right wing culture war subjects instead of what they campaigned on. Hey, rethugs, where are the jobs, or at least the jobs bills?
They will need more police for all those extra jobs they will be doing policing abortion clinics, and serving papers on illegals found through normal police procedures.
One can only hope Mr. Dean experiences the same kind of hatred and persecution that he heaps on others.
A CHAPLAIN is an officer in the US military that has been charged with the care of sodlier's matters of faith. DO NOT call that slob a chaplain! Reverend? Sure. Right winger? Sure. Chaplain? Oh hellsmesomeno!
No mention of necessity to be in the military, rather, an attachment to a secular organization, including hospitals and universities, as well as the military.
dictionaried!
Maybe it's time to put a stop to a daily prayer in the Legislature? It's not that I don't believe they need a good prayin' over, but surely this should be a private activity, not a corporate one?
With just a little bit of luck, all these goofballs will be raptured away tomorrow and we can get on with it...
Happy Judgement Day!
Yay! But remember: It's not supposed to go down (or up, whatever) until 9pm Eastern so WAIT until after that to start looting!
wait, he was talking about the guy giving the prayer thing right? or was he talking about Bachmann? I hope he was talking about bachmann...
He totally sickened me. He is supposedly a "man of God", and yet he lied as he said that it was a non-denominational prayer, and then had to say that every president up until 2008 believed in God. I truly hope that this is the impetus to end the pathetic tradition of opening up each day of the legislature with a prayer.
Klassy with a "K" wearing a track suit to speak in Congress. No respect for anyone or anything enables you to lie while praying.
All the man's many character faults and you pick on his clothes?
It is a long, long list, and you have to start somewhere, MechTrek.
We sure have crazy "chaplains" up here in Minnesota. For instance, the former Minnesota Capitol Chaplain was voted into the state senate last November. His name is Dan Hall. Sound familiar??? (P.S. He too is a big friend with Michele Bachmann)

http://www.midwestchaplains.org/chaplain-dan-hall/
The only word I can think of is appalling. The Republicans need to publicly condemn these remarks and the person responsible for this should be fired. But I am not going to hold my breath waiting for this to happen.
In a track suit? He delivered his address wearing a track suit? dude, that's rude.
Maybe he's accustomed to having to high-tail it when his "sermons" are over.
Is it just me, or am I finally awakening to what Hillary Clinton described as a "vast right wing conspiracy". First the right bullies their way into control of the supreme court. Then they lie and buy their way into control of the the US House, defacto control of the senate, and dominance in state houses throughout the south and midwest. Now they are engineering the destruction of progressive accomplishments in those states, and just salivating over legal challenges which they can take to their supreme court. They have the hidden money now, a mass media outlet at fox and on AM radio, and in evangelical pulpits (tv), and they are using that power to restrict the voting rights of those who support progressive causes. And one of the koch brothers controls who the professors are at a prominent university? Someone please tell me I am wrong.
No, you're not wrong. You hit the nail on the head.
While I could rant for many pages about the damage done by this kind of mental trash I will just go with my best advice for dealing with it.
DON'T DRINK THE KOOL-AID!!!
This is exactly what happens when you have the current abomination of the GOP party in charge. I did a quick peek on Google on this Dean character and within in seconds had seen enough to know I wouldn't want him on any list to be a guest Chaplain at a gas station, let alone a state capitol. I still find it stunning that Mr. Dean, or anyone else, who claims Jesus as their savior could harbor such hateful and dangerous prejudice against anyone or any group.
Although the MN congress is GOP controlled, the only reason MN isn't on the express train to la-la land right now is because of Gov. Dayton. Otherwise, we'd be nothing more than a much colder version of Ohio.
Totally agree. Dayton is keeping us from being the next OH, WI, NJ, or any of the other states taken over by right wing social zealots. I'm happy to see that he so far has shown the spine to not back down in the face of the repubs wacky agenda. Let's hope that Minnesotans will not approve a gay marriage ban next year.
Bradlee Dean gave a speech today, not a prayer. I did a little search of him on line on MN web sites. He has a web site" You can run but you cannot hide. " He got kicked out of a high shcool by the principal about five years ago while doing presentation because his so called anti drug presentation was just a ruse. He volunteered to be a guest chaplain. He is an extremist in hate under the thin banner of" Christian"
The GOP controlled house better do a better job of screening their preachers. this is an embrassment for our whole state. Meanwhile the capitol is in session because they have until Monday to pass a balanced budget. they and Gov. Dayton are miles apart. Hold tough Gov Dayton.
I agree Uffda... Could you imagine the crap we'd be facing if Emmer had won? I suppose a lot like what we see happening east of the St. Croix.
I have been so grateful that Dayton hasn't pulled an Obama yet and caved on everything before negotiations ever began. He may have admitted he was not the best Senator who ever served, but he's doing a pretty darn good job as governor so far.
Isn't it funny how Jon Stewart and Bill O'Reilly went toe to toe because O'Reilly was upset that the President didn't vet Common, but yet O'Reilly hasn't mentioned this issue?
Mr. Zellers wants to separate himself (and his party) from "that type of person", but how many others before Dean? Many republicans have been on the bandwagon with the culture wars in our country. I think espousing religiosity only fuels that flame. I agree with Peggo that prayer should be personal to each member of Congress...which is in the bible, btw. (lol)
Attraction, not promotion, would serve our country in ways never before possible. Culture war might end.
This is a Bull Connors moment in Minnesota. Republicans plan by the end of this upcoming Monday to hold a vote to put an anti-gay marriage amendment on the 2012 ballot in Minnesota.

He's a scared LITTLE BOY, hiding behind religion, who's a racist and a bigot. "Living in Fear" should be the Repubs new mantra. They're scared of blacks, gays, independent women, immigrants, ALL other political parties, non-Christians, educators,......feel free to add any I may have overlooked.
Neuroscientists are beginning to understand that fear puts dramatic constraints on the brain, and hinders our decision-making abilities......which explains the problem with Republicans/TeaBaggers. FEAR.
Sugar B, I love your suggestion for the new Republican mantra. It would be great on bumper stickers and T-shirts. Your second point, regarding what we are learning about brain function, suggests another significant conservative fear: science, in virtually all its disciplines. Also, it's not just strong, "independent women" that are threatening to them (although that is clearly the case), but intelligent, independent-minded people of either gender. Then, of course, there is art, a particularly dangerous form of self-expression. One could go on and on...
If one subscribes to that theory about Republicans (or conservatives) wouldn't one also have to subscribe to the theory that Democrats (or liberals) are just as oppositely brain-wired?
These things don't exist in an evolutionary vacuum. If there was ever an evolutionary advantage to the conservative mindset that was strong enough to survive to exist as a brain-wiring in our current state, isn't the "opposite" liberal mindset that's survived as a brain-wiring just as valid? So aren't they both necessary?
Its R-complex stuff sugar-booger (I really love your handle BTW.) Reptile voices from the ancient dawn counciling fear, aggression, territoriality.
Shannonscubie
Even rats, the most maligned of all mammals, will adopt and nurse baby rats of they are found abandoned and untended. Mammals nurture and care for their own, it is part of what allows them to survive. Granted some mammals have the distressing propensity to eat there own young, but among reptiles that is the rule and not the exception. My point is that it is not enough that politicians breathe air and drink water. They must also be able to regulate their own body temperature to 98.6*. When was the last time you saw a Republican who wasn't sunning himself on a hot rock or hiding under it to cool off? Well there you go!
LOL! I thought those were the IT helpdesk guys...
The point I apparently didn't make very well is that IF it's true that humans are "wired" in varying degrees of conservatism (quickly-tripped fear response) AND liberalism (thrill-seeking), wouldn't it be true that both contribute to the welfare of the whole? After all, rats AND lizards are both part of the ecosystem!
Well more to the point, we are Americans, one nation, one tribe, one big assed family. Internal fear and dissension serve only to splint us and facilitate socio-economic cannibalism. Quick historical example. Reagan helped facilitate the exodus of manufacturing by weaking unions. American jobs were lost as the owners of the the companies bottom lines were fattened from cheap 3rd world labor. The welfare of the employees was sacrificed for the bottom line of the owners. Cannibalism. Factories were shut down forcing the families who worked there to go on welfare, along with all of the businesses who depended on the people who were employed by the factories. Reagan further fattened the bottom line of the business owners by giving tax cuts to them. The make up the difference, he gutted the social safety net, leaving those left without jobs with absolutely no means. No legitimate means. Cannibalism. Like the answer to a prayer, a new form of cocaine appears on the inner city which forms an entirely new economy that allows its dealers to became millionaires without requiring and education, only that one live their lives in dog years. Features of this new economy are crack babies, crack heads, crack whores, drive-bys, and the newly familiar refrain of machine-gun fire on American streets. Cannibalism.
As I was saying, rats and lizards share the eco-system and have their role to play within it. True. But as American, we are one nation one tribe one big ass family. And these cold blooded snake hearted Conservative principals make for piss-poor family values in terms of America AS a family. Mammalian values were Eisenhower pushing for a balance budget before considering tax cuts and the boom of the post world war 2 economy. Eisenhower, again, sending the national guard to desegregate schools in the wake of Brown v. Board of Education, Johnson signing the Civil Right Act, The Great Society programs, Medicare, FDR signing Social Security into law.
Oddly enough, it is all captured nicely in Jane's Addiction's Three Days:
Lastly, Christ was most definitely a mammal. Only a mammal would have said this...http://biblebrowser.com/matthew/25-35.htm.
However, ever since Reagan was elected in '80, the nation has pretty much been in the claws of reptiles ever since.
R-complexers who like to cultivate large if not over sized amydalas (fear centers) so that they can have sheeple who follow orders from on high. If you aren't afraid then that makes them afraid. Authoritarian leaders and their authoritarian followers. Its all in the brain morphology.
The prayer is fine and supported by both sides. It's used more as a coming together moment before the fighting starts. But my concern is that our state government is NOT a corporation!
What's the deal with the prayer? Have these guys not heard of separation of church and state? Man, I thought my home state of Mississippi had stupid politicians...
Many references to the U.S. Constitution, but he apparently hasn't read it.
I'll just add this to the list of reasons why I left Minnesota!!
that was not a prayer...that was the rantings of an egomaniac...maybe ted nugent could use a heavy metal drummer, they could have the battle of the egos onstage.
He's probably wearin' the track suit so's he'll be all comfy-like fer The Rapture tomorrow. I'm sure he feels like he's on the right side of that fence...
Rachel,
Suggest you invite a very smart young lady, Amy Myers, of Cherry Hill, New Jersey who noted several incorrect pronouncements by Bachmann regarding the Constitution. Rather than accept Bachmann's strong announcements, she questioned why a member of the House of Representatives would speak so strongly about the Constitution without verifying the information. So, on May 14, 2011, her letter to Bachmann challenging her to a debate on the Constitution & other matters discussed in her Civics Class was on the Yahoo News. So far, there has not been any mention of this very interesting challenge on the TV news. How about doing a segment on this young teen. Thanks.
This news is much better. On 5/14/11 Yahoo news had a very interesting item re a letter sent by a teen, Amy Myers of Cherry Hill, N.J. after reading and hearing the rantings of Bachmann. Amy who noticed many inconsistencies & incorrect references, decided to challenge Bachmann to a debate about the Constitution. There was a follow up piece on Yahoo news but not one of the TV & cable news picked up on this. Why? Was it due to all sexual encounters of 2 powerful men & Newt? I was expecting your show to put a spotlight on this young lady. So far, there has not been any response from Bachmann. Do you think you can give this some attention? I would certainly watch that debate, & so will many others.
