@TheNewsIsBroken spots this visual shout-out in Madison to New York Rep. Anthony Weiner. It's hard telling whether this is wishful thinking on the part of the demonstrator or the harbinger of a real shift.
Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker says the Democratic state senators who've been blocking a vote on his budget-repair bill have to come home and get defeated on the measure by Tuesday (after previous deadlines of Friday and Saturday), or else he'll start with the layoffs. The Twitters were hopping yesterday with rumors that a very, very few Republican State Senators would change positions and come out against the bill. Democrats would need to bring three votes over to their side. I'm not saying it's impossible or isn't happening, just that there doesn't seem to be any actual, reportable news on that this morning.
Yesterday on Meet the Press, Gov. Walker sounded more or less unmovable on the issue of collective bargaining for state employees. He also got the explicit backing of a guy who reportedly got the explicit backing of President Ronald Reagan, back in the day. Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour told NBC that the reason President Obama has been so quiet about the situation in Wisconsin, despite campaigning on union rights in 2007, is that he agrees with Gov. Walker. "The president is one of the greatest politicians in the history of the United States , and he -- and he's quiet because he understands that most Americans know this has to be done," Mr. Barbour said.

Thank you for sharing this pic. Props to one of the most mack daddy moments in the House, EVER.
I cirrusly, honestly, truly doubt that the President stands for Tea Party malarkey. For any political reason. As if. Turn on my own? Never? Not again! That's what the Right is after...duh. Divided we fall. President Obama is still the President...he has his own "Midnight Regulations" ready, I'm sure of it dot dot dot and who among you saw DOMA coming? So, there. Change winds are blowing strong, the people are united against the Kochocracy...and that's pronounced like the bathroom sealant, look it up.

THERE HAS BEEN A NEWS BLACKOUT ( WHAT DOES HE NEED TO HIDE ) ?
I. Want. That. Sign.
LOL!! Wow!
Collective bargaining is worshipped by the GOP in every other form it takes, except labor. They love Walmart and Sam's Club and Costco, which are basically buyer's unions. They love corporations, which are unions of shareholders pooling their capital to create a business enterprise and share the risk. They really love the insurance industry, which is basically a union of people pooling their health risk. They really love HMOs which are basically unions of companies selling their services.
They don't like labor unions because labor unions give a voice to the voiceless and power to the powerless.
It seems to be time to float an amendment to the Constitution, establishing the fundamental right of people to organize in labor unions.
I am so tired of the Sunday Shows giving platforms to the radical right. I think Obama can speak for himself, thank you Mr Barbour!
Letting politicians speak on these shows does not get at the heart of the matter, they say whatever they want, usually untrue, or just plain outrageous and get everyone way off topic.
We have the same set up in Canada, our one show has the politicians involved as guests, everyone yells at each other, and the thinly veiled right-wing hosts mock the left side constantly. This is why I watch something like TRMS, no yelling, people breath between words. Questions are asked and answered.
Mary B, again, you're coming here with nothing but insults and inflammatory comments, but nothing of substance when it comes to counter arguments. Again, please, if you are going to say that we're wrong, cite examples on how. I already pointed out to you that your idea that the Wisconsin Unions are trying to keep their "free ride from the taxpayer, when in fact they pay 100% for their pensions and healthcare- AND they have said they'll agree to the cuts as long as they keep their right to negotiate.
8 deleted, Mary B.-2598019 continuing a long history of trolling with:
Amidst smearing Ms. Maddow. Banned.
Any chance on an IP ban, tyler? I suspect from the language its a repeat offender with multiple accounts.
well, that leaves Mary out.
'in the land of the insane, the sane person is crazy.'
On Usenet, that sort of language was very common.
They already do IP ban's. Also.. is Maddow protected by the COH as a member of Newsvine / MSNBC? So.. is smearing her off-limits but say.. smearing Rush Limbaugh fair game? I'd like clarification. Thanks in advance.
Simplistic Reality- I can't speak for MSNBC and Newsvine, but Mary B was using incredibly derogitory language to describe everyone she responded to, including Ms. Maddow. I'd like to think that personal attacks that have nothing to do with the conversation, no matter who they are directed to, will be deleted.
Mary B was basically posting the same ad-hominem attack over and over again, being a troll.
I understand all that and Tyler made the right call, but my question was more specifically directed at public people. Like slamming Obama, Rush, Beck, Charlie Sheen or whatever in a conversation. It's done all over the Vine on topics / arguments. I've just never seen it be an issue because it wasn't a personal attack against a fellow Viner. My question was.. what makes Maddow any different? Is it because its her MSNBC blog and a member of the same community we are? That was my question. Just wanted some clarification.
You aren't allowed to bash rachel on here in a derogatory manner. You can say you disagree with her and why, that is fine. But saying things like "rachel is a nut" or calling her a dyke isn't tolerated. This blog is a fan site for Rachel Maddow and The Rachel Maddow Show. Fans of RM and TRMS should feel completely OK coming to this website to talk about Rachel. By bashing her or TRMS you make the environment hostile towards fans of the show and/or fans of RM. You are asked to respect each other and this is the one place where RM/TRMS fans should feel respected in regards to their fandom. I would expect that the same rule applies to Glenn Beck's own blog or Hannity's etc. If you want to troll Maddow that is your personal business, but you are asked to do it elsewhere. Remember that there is a huge difference between trolling someone and disagreeing with someone.
You are also more than welcome to create your own Newsvine blog to troll Maddow. That can be done through your account. You are just asked not to do it on the TRMS blog site.
I've grown pretty tired of the folks who are on newsvine yet ONLY post here to fight or "disagree" with comments posted here by fans of RM or TRMS. They only post here...and are always negative or in disagreement. Seems weird to me that with all the articles available on which to comment...they choose to only come here and disturb the vibe.
I really hope all of the above was not directed at me. I've been around here a long time and I know what's up. My question to Tyler was just clarification on the matter as others have asked me the same question I asked. I'm happy for you that your a hardcore RM fan Mickey Mouser.
It has been inadvertently, but for the record I was just trying to give you an answer Simplistic. You sounded like you honestly wanted to know and I was trying to answer as accurately and as best as I could. I'm sorry for coming across as rude, that was NOT my intention. I was just trying to answer your concern, that was all.
SR: No no...not directed at you at all...just me sort of venting.
Until the Wisconsin public employees and their supporters take economic action against Walker's contributors and those who enable him, they're just postponing the inevitable. The Repubs can wait them out, and they will.
Stop buying things from Walker supporters, and take your business to those who support working people. Do it publicly. And do it NOW.
I taught 22 years in the public schools and all that time I didn't realize I wasn't a taxpayer...Something sure came out of my paycheck.
I hope Walker does lay off the 10-11,000 state employees he's threatened to. I really do. The people of WI will realize immediately what such a layoff does to the state and they will learn exactly what it is public workers do for them. Walker will also kick himself when he realizes the dramatic economic impact it's going to have on his state. If he thinks the budget crises he's facing now is bad, wait until he axes off chunks of his own labor force. Remember poor people don't pay taxes, Mr. Walker.
I hate to see employees laid off, but agree. This might be what is needed to wake people up. It amazes me they don't realize the effects this will cause to the budget without tax collection on these workers and the unemployed drawing benifits from the state. Even if the bill passes, less taxes will be paid to the state as well federal tax. Will they then legislate higher taxes to meet budget shortfalls and continue lowering rates for buisness and wealthy citizens since they provide jobs for people who have no funds to purchase the product or service?
I don't want anyone getting laid off either, but I think politically we have reached a point where until the you-know-what hits the fan people will not wake up. The "government is not the solution...government is the problem" meme has gotten to the point that people no longer believe their government does anything for them. People no longer believe there is value in the public sector and because of that they are willing to hang anyone who works for the public sector by a noose. How many times do you hear people on the extreme right making statements like "government is incapable of doing anything correct"? One can only believe this statement if they are blinded to what it is government does every day for them. So fine if government is such an evil awful terrible horrible thing why fear it shutting down? Why fear government employees being laid off or government services being cut? Hmmm?? Laying workers off is going to destroy WI economy and then Walker will learn what an actual budget crises is. Even making workers take pay cuts is an economically stupid idea (because of the loss of economic revenue), but this would go beyond that insanity.
When the s*** hits the fan, it won't be evenly distributed.
Obivously, some people have not read the book, Death and Life of the American School System by Diane Ravitch, a former Under Secterary of State, the former presidents of the United States, George H. B. Bush and Bill Clinton. She make some very good arguments about why the school systems are receiving such a bad reputation. She once thought the school choice program was a worthy program and now criticizes it as a profitable program for the test makers and does nothing for the improvement of education. She has a plan for teacher accountablity which makes sense to me. The programs of No Child Left Behind and even The Race to the Top, by the Obama administration will do nothing to improve our system of education. Programs such as Early Childhood Education and nutrition programs that help much many children in poor sections of cities and our country are of real benifit.
I have gone on too long, Rachel. I love your show and especially the times when your correct the false fact checkers. I also miss Keith Obermann.
Sincerely,
LeRoy Peterson, A retired Special Education teacher and a former member of the Rights and Responsilities Committee of Wisconsin Education Association.
Hmm The point of unions is a group of individuals standing together, so I think what the unions should do is all agree to do just that, and they should all stand together (**ALL** of the unions) and if Walker tries his layoffs then they should call for a COMPLETE work stoppage across all unions in the state. (If they came for one union at first and you didn't speak up who would be there to speak up when they come for yours, just because they left your union out of this particular legislation.) And since they seem to want to make this a National issue. The unions should call them on it and go national as well.
Windows are now being bolted down in WI capitol to prevent people passing food into the protestors. Only employees with ID (and lobbyists) are being allowed in. Capitol police have been replaced by State troopers (head of state patrol is father of Republican majority leader).
oh, the sign is about Walker??
i was confused as it used the term, "gentleman".
and about bringing 3 Repubs over, well, we've heard Walker's plan to fake them out by seeming to negotiate and then pass it once the quorum was established, so what's to say that they'll not do the same thing with pretending to change their stance?
i'm sure i'm missing something, but it seems like the only option to assure maintaining bargaining rights is for the bill to be killed outright; it would be impossible to know for sure that it could actually be voted down.
What no one is talking about is the untenable position that Mr. Walker has backed himself into. He has been so adamant about not budging, that if he budges he will lose the support of his base - and become a one term governor. If he doesn't budge, there is a chance he could be kicked out of office in a recall election later this year (less than one term). The man doesn't have any good choice, and sticking to his guns is the only play he has right now (or at least that is what he believes). A sensible legislator would have already resolved this and accepted the compromise that the unions put forth, as the unions agreed to EVERY one of his demands except for eliminating collective bargaining.
We need more legislators in government that follow the compromise as part of negotiation, rather than the "my way or the highway" form of legislating. Due to that sentence, I am by default a Democrat.
The great thing about hearing what Haley Barbour thinks about anything is that it's the surest way of knowing what is the wrong thing to think about anything.
I've been saying this for the longest time and now the longest time has come around: "Everything we know as public will be privatized and the middle class will no longer be. The only classes we will know is the privileged and the low." It's happening before our very eyes. It started a long time ago, got a big push with the economic downturn and now is being forged ahead with the systemic dismantling of the collective bargaining process. Soon the middle class will know little of what is left of public education. For those who can afford to buy the books, they will be the lucky ones and the "chosen ones" who will be allowed to keep their teaching jobs in public schools will be envied. But the teachers who will be envied even more will be those who manage to be hand-picked for the private schools, because those are the only schools that will be left for the most part. There will be no eduction to speak of except for the privileged wealthy, after all, there will be no jobs, all manufacturing will be outsourced, or only the dumb peons will be the slave laborers. Is this what we want? I tell you, if we don't UNITE this IS what we will get. This is the alleged PLAN of the likes of the Major Corporatocracies. Will we be ruled by a Plutocracy in the end? Only if we allow it.
Glad to see I am not the only one who sees the writing on the wall.
The novel that comes to mind. When I heard of the Wisconsin Governors midnight vote to destroy the american Unions is THE WATCH ON THE RHINE. AYN IT IS HAPPENING AGAIN.
