Tonight's guests:
- E.J. Dionne, columnist, Washington Post, senior fellow, The Brookings Institution
- Amanda Marcotte, contributing writer for Slate's The XX Factor
- Ana Marie Cox, Washington correspondent, GQ Magazine
Here's Bill Wolff with a preview of tonight's show:

You know who you should really get on the show...
Keith Olbermann.
I wish I could upvote that twice.
yep. Host half the show, although I think Rachel or Lawrence should pull a Dan Rather at some point in the show and walk off the set. Maybe Walk off early? I can't watch until Keith's back though.
1.3 deleted, Amanda Payne plugging their blog. Don't.
If we pull the podcast instead of watching live, how does it affect a show's ratings? I'm wicked pi$$ed right now but I don't want to hurt Rachel due to Keith's suspension.
BRING BACK KEITH!!!
I believe whether one watches a show or not is irrelevant to the show's ratings unless one has a little black box attached to the television they are watching, which records the program being viewed, or one completes a diary for the ratings firm detailing what programs were watched and when. I have also heard that periodic telephone surveys are used to provide a third data source.
Thanks, might! I'll download Countdown. Thomas Roberts, former WAVY anchor, is filling in. He promises to address the situation. In the meantime I'm indulging in Harry Potter. Two week to "Deathly Hallows"!!!
hey mightbealiberal...really enjoy your postings,.....but.... I don't think that is true anymore...I believe through cable they make their own ratings....don't need the little black box any more....??????
Here is a link to TV By the Numbers which covers just about all the ratings breakdowns one would want. They address this question in their FAQs section. "Set top box" data is measured but not currently used in determining the ratings, apparently because it lacks any demographic information.
http://tvbythenumbers.com/numbers-102
I should have mentioned that DVR/TiVO viewing is also measured, so if you are in the survey population, if you record a show and watch it later (either same day or within a week), they include that in the ratings also.
I hope you bring the fire tonight. This is outrageous. I'm beginning to think its only a matter of time before we're run out of the country. Will someone show some BALLS and fight back? Wouldn't that be awesome if that person turned out to be a woman?
Personally, I think you should have Kent's brother Tank on EVERY... SINGLE... NIGHT!
I'm with you Kitten post#2. Perhaps this isn't the place for a pitch- a- bitch but my day always consited of the Keith and then Rachel shows. I will only watch Rachel now and MSNBC can get on my @!$%# list along with FOX.
Long live Rachel and BRING BACK KEITH
What happend to "Lean Forward????"
I third that! I hope Rachel addresses this on her show tonight.
She probably can't because of the back lash from the "Lean Forward Bosses."
Pathetic!
I don't know how she can. Look how MSNBC muzzled David Shuster (oh, what a cutie pie too!) after his audition with CNN. Besides Rachel, David was the best fill-in for Countdown ever. His giggling in glee with all the bad tea-bagger puns were so over-the-top dirty...well, I'm a 12 year-old boy inside! But I don't think she'll say anything about Keith's suspension. It's not professional.
Rachel, I still support you and your show! Rock on!
Was not a fan of David. He was more like Hannity than anyone else on that network. Cenk's the only one that actually clicked. (that and Lawrence)
Maddow just said she will be addressing the Olbermann suspension on TRMS tonight. Tune in.
I hope ytou take up this Keith Olbermann issue. I am furious at this move. I think all reporters at MSNBC should give to liberal candidates in defiance of this move. Are you brave enough to face up to your bosses?
The saddest thing about the Olbermann incident is that it happened on a Friday, which means I won't get to hear Jon Stewart take the piss out of MSNBC about it until Monday. Couldn't you all have done this yesterday?
In any case, I've always gotten the impression that Keith was instrumental in launching Dr. Maddow's show and that the two have a lot of respect if not downright feelings of friendship for each other. I know that if he asks her not to address his suspension on her show she won't, but I would like to see her say something, even if it's just "He asked me not to talk about it."
At the expense of getting deleted, here is a petition to put the Keith Olbermann show back on:
http://act.boldprogressives.org/sign/petition_olbermann/?akid=2628.3133.L3uAyM&rd=1&source=e1-3mo-subj&t=1
It's at 95%!!! and don't forget the Facebook page, http://www.facebook.com/?ref=logo#!/pages/Keep-Keith-Olbermann-On-msnbc/138881709496821
As angry as I am about Keith, if this happened to Rachel they would have to strap me down and dose me because it would be, "to the moon MSNBC!!!" Hell would have no fury...
Yay for AMC!
Unfortunately, I don't think I can "protest" MSNBC because I already don't watch the shows live (I download the podcasts). I never would have started watching Rachel's show if it hadn't been for Keith's. I agree with Utterly Professional; please, Rachel, make a statement about his suspension, even if it's to say, "I've been asked not to comment." We need to know that you're just as outraged over this as we are!
Love the show, Rachel; never change!
First of all, I am glad there is a show tonight. and that Rachel is hosting it.
Secondly, I hope Rachel never does anything to get herself suspended or fired, because I really like her and look forward to watching her. Because of watching this show, I feel I am more politically educated.
agree, eaglelady
So I'm watching Thomas Roberts to get MSNBC's justification for it's foolishness regarding Keith Olbermann. After that . . . . its lights out for MSNBC until Phil Griffin is gone.
Hope Keith gets to do a cameo on 30 Rock. Jack can perhaps "mentor" him.
Jack and Keith at the same time on my screen??? Dude, my panties would asplode!

You're next. Walk out now!
Bring Keith Olbermann back! MSNBC is screwing up!
Now I'm pushing it but here is a phone numer to call. I did and you can leave a message with your protest.
MSNBC/NBC
30 Rockefeller Plaza, New York, NY 10112
Phone: (212) 664-4444
Fax: (212) 664-4426
We need Keith back, it boosts our audience . Now liberals won't watch Fox.
I started listening to Rachel Maddow on Air America. I don't think she depends on MSNBC to speak. No one actually has to go through a corporately owned cable channel to speak. Audiences have to learn how to find news without the crutch of a TV. I can, and I will if this is how MSNBC is going to roll now.
Rachel Maddow is no longer on Air America, Air America is gone. I don't think Maddow works for anyone but MSNBC, so for now, she does "depend" on MSNBC to speak to a viewing or listening audience. Even maddowblog is MSNBC affiliated.
Rachel, I won't be watching tonight. MSNBC lost me as a viewer today. I like Keith and, well, you were just on after him. I didn't take long for me to grow very fond of your show. But, I'm just not going to be there anymore to catch your show.

Is Comcast behind this?
OMG, this is really scary! I sound like an alarmist but Corporate America seems to be shutting down our voices. Inch by insidious inch our freedoms are being eroded. What next, book burning???
If Rachel doesn't talk tonight about her brother Keith, she will be tuned out as well. The problem here isn't Phil Griffin, underling boss, but the big hammer, Steve Burke, from Comcast and big fundraiser for George Bush. I think we get it. http://thinkprogress.org/?p=128695
I'll miss the Rachel Maddow show. It has been my favorite since it debuted in 2008. But now that Comcast is in charge, I'll have to find another source for a progressive slant. Until net neutrality is finally defeated.
Gabby Giffords wins in 8th district, Tucson, AZ!!!!!! Glad they got this done tnite, might have been so miserable by morning I wouldn't have been able to get out of bed tomorrow.
