All this hoo-hah today over whether or not a video of Katy Perry and the muppets is too hot for Sesame Street made me think about my favorite celebrity cameos.
There's Patti Labelle doing the ABC song better than any other human being ever has or ever will:
And Marilyn Horne's gloriously campy version of "C is for Cookie."

My favorite is Nathan Lane singing "Sing" with the "Oinker Sisters"

So, what do we have to do to get Rachel Maddow on Sesame Street? Should we start a Facebook campaign?
Hey it worked to get Betty White on SNL!
Maybe Rachel can do a vampire skit with the Count :D
my personal favorite is from the Muppet show is Mahhna Mahnna and the Snowths.

and I agree, we need to start a campaign to get Rachel on the show.
I LOVE that skit. And the Muppet Show. Wish it was still on :(
A year or two ago Neil Patrick Harris was on Sesame Street as the Shoe Fairy. It was SO funny. Telly (who I hate) was having issues picking out shoes to wear...and Neil was assisting him, getting increasingly frustrated and snarky.
Does anyone like Telly? (honest question. Never met someone who did.)
I think even as a kid 30 years ago I hated him. He was always so damn whiny and irritating. I always like Cookie, Oscar and Grover.
I just spent an entirely embarrassing amount of time looking at old Sesame Street videos. One of my favorites is Paul Simon and Ladysmith Black Mambazo doing the Alphabet Song.

I think the TRMS crew just did the same thing Mike. Go crew.
Stevie Wonder performing "Superstition." Funkalicious. And totally awesome.

Ah, the young Stevie... what year was this recorded?
From other, related YouTube videos, it seems this particular Stevie appearance (there were others) was in 1973.
Ah, 1973 was a very good year. Eh, Maddow?
Lena Horne!

This is from the Muppet Show, but it's amazingly incredible:

Thanks for that, spent all morning watching Sesame Street, sure is a different show than it was 25 years ago! Don't really see the fuss about the Katy Perry video? I enjoyed it.
WOW was that Thursdays moment of Zen?
I like it.
Katy was cute; Elmo was cute; playing tag is always cute and especially to that song. Maybe dialing back on the decolletage would have gotten it all past those snarky viewers...
Regarding the brouhaha: one would think if Katie Perry's outfit was inappropriate for Sesame Street the producers would have had her change before the bit was shot.
I viewed the Katy Perry/Elmo video and found it cute, funny and devoid of any innuendo or inappropriate content. Parents who viewed it and thought it needed to be banned need to get their minds out of the gutter.
That video of Patti Labelle was wonderful!
Yeah, I saw the Perry clip--she began by commenting about wearing a costume, (and I thought the bit was really cute). When I found out enough people complained to have the video withdrawn, I was shocked that PBS caved to these idiots. I was mortified to later find out that Perry was even wearing a sheer garment that covered her chest nearly to her neck--and they still complained! How do you put a stop to these nuts when they even have such influence over Sesame Street? People, it's time for us all to speak out--loudly--and shut up these loathesome fearmongering haters. They are literally coming out of the woodwork.
The "bouncing" was a bit much, but I agree there was nothing "wrong" with the clip. I would venture to guess that kids that watch the show don't think of things in sexual terms or imagery, so yes, give it a break. (at least kids up to the age of about 10...)
And I don't think it was Sesame Street (I believe it was the Muppet Show), but what about Alice Cooper singing "School's Out" with the images of blowing up schools? How was that "appropriate" for kids at the time? This clip was completely innocuous compared with the rest of the sexual overload that kids see on TV today. IMO anyway... (and yes, I DO "regulate" TV time and what my kids watch.)
Rachel, you gonna be on SS?? Yeah that'll be cool ..... not impossible..... some morons claimed bert & earnie are gays anyway.
Rachel has warned us there is a culture war on - this is more evidence.
maybe soon these politically-insane people say all puppets/muppets hv to wear clothes on tv.
Here's one of my favorite songs from Sesame Street. It just popped into my head today. (Then I had to search for this thread!)
