ABC News called Lynda Carter in Nashville and asked her about the change:
"I think Wonder Woman has a mind of her own. And I think she was just kind of ready for something new. She's got an attitude and if this is the new thing that she wants to wear, well, by God, she's going to wear it. And I like that. And I hope that in the story someone mentions, where's the old one? And she says, get over it!"
The new look's creator, Jim Lee, argues that this is meant to be more functional:
"If you or I were wearing the Wonder Woman costume, we'd be very aware we were wearing it, you know, essentially a swimsuit, fighting crime. So we created a costume that is essentially more functional, more protective," said Lee.
But this is the more telling quote:
"When I draw Wonder Woman in her classic costume it looks normal to me, but when I see it on TV on Lynda Carter, I can't help but go, 'Oh my God, she's half naked,'" said Lee.

She inspired my aunt to finally buy a padded butt. I know that might not seem like much but my aunts self-esteem went sky high after that. True story!
Sometimes its the little things in life that make me laugh and then I think of my family.
This is actually really good, it's dare I say, Empowering even!
They can't remake underoos out of the new costume. I miss mine :)
Great post - love the new threads. Dating myself, but this was one of my first cartoon empowerment kind of thingy - the women could be superhero's too thing..I can olny imagine if I'd started out with Xena: Warrior Princess...
I can remember watching her in palm springs on vacation with my sister. If the wait cut into WW time, we left back to the hotel to watch her and came back to the restaurant. I was pretty spoiled, but I had to get those bullet blocking wrist moves down. Ching/ Ching good times.
Terrific costume design. Now they need to make a new Wonder Woman movie and get Kate Beckinsdale to play the part. She would look yummy in that outfit (drool).
Oh, yes ! Kate would make a wonderful Wonder Woman, especially in the new costume !!
politically-correct dressed WW ..... i kinda miss the red-gold bustier ;)
Next up: Batman's more revealing costume!
(Or not.)
He doesn't need a more revealing costume, he's the Goddamn Batman!
Ah, but does she like the new anime look of the character?
Wonder Woman somehow seems to have lost her historic perspective? I'm not sure that going from a female TV role model of the 1980's to just being another female exploited in a video game is such a big step forward.
That being said, I find like the look...all except the shrug. That fashion invention is the worst thing that has happened to women since the bra.
Historical roots? Well, the TV show was in the '70s, not the '80s, but WW herself goes back to WWII. I doubt she'll be battling Nazis again any time soon.
This isn't anime style what so ever. Anime/Manga ascetic generally talks about proportion: generally it requires larger eyes, smaller mouths, smaller nose, and that character is just not It's a modern comic book design. There's a little bit of Liji Masamoto and Osamu Tezuka in there, but any deisgner would use that now-a-days.
Personally, I like it, but I think it's just a little too much black. Maybe some gold in the pants to make it less like she's just stepped out of a Sex and the City film.
If she were anime style in this modern age she'd probably have a delicious flat chest, yet the gazongas are still being shown off. Functional my butt, where's the sports bra?
The new costume isn't the problem. The new backstory is the problem. They essentially nuke Paradise Island and neatly dispose of all those women who don't live with men. Thanks for the lesbian purge, there, DC. Nothing like a good anti-gay genocide.
Imagine how many refrigerators they're going to need
/deep, deep comic geek joke.
While the Wonder Woman outfit is due an update, the new overall concept for her is reminiscent of the worst that the 90s with its "just add water" approach to comics offered. For example, when W.W. hits someone with her bracelets it supposedly leaves a "W" shaped mark. Not at all in keeping with the concept of Wonder Woman. Jim Lee needs to read some of what has been written about Wonder Woman. For example, The Hiketeia, one of the best graphic novels written in awhile. The new look is a rehash of Jim Lee's previous art, give her red hair and you'd have Rogue or Jean Grey as they appeared in the X-Men comics. And seriously - a motorcycle jacket? Really?
I don't like this. Diana's managed so far without pants, why does she need them now? Has she lost skill? Is she getting cellulite as an elder amazon?
I think we need a reason why she is only making this change now when she avoided doing so many times in the past. New flexible materials that wick away sweat?
