Rep. Joe Barton, right, knows from oil money. Photo: Republican Conference
Rep. Joe Barton (R-Texas) played hometown ball today at a House Energy and Commerce subcommittee. Barton told BP CEO Tony Hayward that he's sorry President Obama had the company set aside $20 billion to settle claims in the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.
From the Houston Chronicle's energy blog:
At a House Energy and Commerce subcommittee hearing on the spill, Barton apologized to BP CEO Tony Hayward for the "tragedy" that a private corporation could be subject to a "20 billion shakedown."
"There is no question that BP is liable for the damages," that are a consequence of the spill, Barton said. But, he added, "we have a due process system" to determine what those damages are.
Barton's top campaign contributor since 1989, Anadarko Petroleum, just happens to be one of the four parties held responsible for the Deepwater Horizon disaster. Anadarko is refusing to testify on Capitol Hill about how it's helping the shrimpers and other folks put out of work by the spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
Overall, Barton has taken in more than $1.4 million in contributions from the oil and gas industry since 1989. UPDATE: That total includes $27,350 from people and PACS associated with BP.

I was FLOORED by his statements. Within 5 minutes, his office number was being passed around Twitter like a hot potato. I'm guessing his office is being FLOODED with calls.
Public Dunking is a good founding fathers penalty for liars and thieves. This would be approprate for Barton,Palin,Beck and Limpballs as well !
Tea Baggers are now in a trap....from their paid off Corporate pretend leaders like Dick Army, Michele Backman, Rush Limpballs, Palin and Beck etc etc
They can agree with the stated anti American, pro British Capitalism stands of their leaders.......but they must realize this puts them against the Patriots in the American Revolution and for the Rich capitalist English who were just "trying to make a buck" in the colonies! Now their tea bags with wigs on!
Their over.....their cover is blown....their Totalitarian Capatalists
who want small government and no regulations.....clearing the field for the "Big" people to eat the "small" people at will !
They go the way of the most profit...if that means people die, then consider it a good decision to lay their lives on the alter of ultimate profit for the God of the Rich.
Tea Baggers you party's ...OVER !
I think BP needs to create this fund, but how do we know how much to set aside? What happens when the $20 billion runs out and people are still suffering from this tragic disaster?
Due process though, Senator? Really? Aren't the victims of the Exxon Valdez still fighting in court for their due? A deep pocket operation like BP would have top flight ruthless lawyers, while the shrimpers would have no one.
It's guys like him that have corrupted our government.
There is NO CAP on the $20 Billion if more is needed.
Patricia-250002:
You are correct. Plus, BP must set aside an additional $100M (with no cap) for those businesses that have suffered as a result of BP's negligence.
On another note, I'm sure Barton's constituents will remember his cheerleading for BP come election time ... LOL ... what a tool!
100M is for out of work rig workers not Gulf businesses. But the 20B still has no cap for people affected by the spill.
BP does need to set aside the money. And there will likely be more gushing out of the well of their deep and extensive reserves.
Here's something, though:
one of the four parties held responsible for the Deepwater Horizon disaster
I've been wondering about that. I'm not sure who the fourth is, but why has everyone suddenly forgotten that there are other companies involved here who have a share of the blame? Why is no one trying to hold TransOcean or Haliburton liable? BP may have instructed them to cut corners, but they're still the ones who did the work.
Got it - thanks for the clarification, Maria
The four responsible parties are BP,Haliburton,TransOcean, and Anadarko Petroleum.Joe Barton (R) of Texas is former CEO of Anadarko and still owns stock in the company.I wrote an article about it last week on Newsvine. It has the real reason why he apologized to BP.
Yea his constituants will remember... The problem is his constituants are mostly Oil execs.. Can I say Texas Oil.. Thats what made that state rich... So he is going along with his constituants wishes anyway..
Maybe it's time to revive the Sedition Act- This is out and out Treason
It's not treason. It is unethical though. The judge who stopped the drilling moratorium owns stock in TransOcean. That's unethical too.
Actually, he owns more than just TransOcean stock. He own's stocks in KBR, Halliburton, Parker Drilling, Prospect Energy, Peabody Energy, Hercules Offshore, Atlas Energy Resources, and a whole slew of other companies directly involved in oil and offshore drilling.
At the very least, he should have recused himself. But that would take courage which he obviously does not possess.
Good research Freedom Maid.Americans who aren't afraid to seek out the truth.Makes me feel like all isn't lost.I'm writing a letter to have him investigated.
Yea..we know where his loyalty is!!!
That phony a-hole! This guy doesn't give a damn about due process, he's just burned that the industry that bought him into office was held accountable. Barton and the likes of him have no shame when they discover they aren't in control.
It's a talking point: http://tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com/2010/06/say-what-gopers-slam-white-house-over-bp-gulf-spill-fund.php
Some of these guys act like thralls... or belong to the Cult of Rush... or something
The Republicans are mad that President Obama made a speech that got the Money from BP.
Thanks President Obama for not listing to all the people who thought your speech was empty, you knew exactly what you were doing, but we know no one will give you credit for getting the money from BP. They all thought you did not have the guts or courage to get anything from BP.
This is the most money anyone or even Presidents have gotten from Oil Companies and all these pundits know Obama cannot stop this oil leak. The Leak will be stopped as soon as the other wells are finished being built.
Thank you President Obama for getting the Money for The American People.
He was setting them up for the knock out.
Moderate speech. Make BP's attorneys act overconfident.
BP's attorneys tell C.E.O. they can handle this wimp!
Obama comes in and tears into the C.E.O.
Walks out...leaving them shakin! Unbalanced!
Invites C.E.O. into Presidental office. Shows him a way out.....CEO doesn't know which way is up!! knock out Obama!
meanwhile Biden tells other managers " You don't understand, this is not a request from the President its whats going to happen...one way or the other....NOW!
Attorneys yelled at by BP for miss reading the President!
America Wins
Another three pointer for Obama perfect art of war strategy!
Historic Win!
Yes they are mad he got the money for us(the American people who live in the gulf area). The republicans would not have gotten it.They would be using FEMA(taxpayer money) and letting BP off the hook. How would they let BP off the hook? They would force every affected party to spend 5-20 years in court. Most of those people would be financially devastated and not have the resources to fight.Even though they deserve the money for damages.Meanwhile those corporations will start or continue to receive government subsidies.Which stop the corporations bottom line from being affected. It's how they have done any corporate entity that has harmed American citizens, especially oil and coal companies. With the fund being established it puts the damaged parties in better financial shape to fight in court without giving up because of bankruptcy. So the fund also helps see that justice is served in the courts.
His actions punctuates just how broken our political system is - where is the loyalty to his country and his constituents. To visualize the magnitude of this disaster go to http://www.ifitwasmyhome.com/ It is scary!!!
Don't try calling his office to let him know that he is a "@!$%#" his mailbox is full
I hope this means the end of Joe Barton. Texas cannot afford to be as apoligetic--or can they.
Rachel's "re-written" Obama speech last night was the height of audacity. That is happening to her? I want my investigative reporting Rachel back.
Nor can we afford James Inhofe in Oklahoma...but you can't tell the corrupt idiots who keep sending him back that!
Ahoy, Don Quixokie. James Inhofe is a robotic destroyer of worlds. From what spatial anomaly do these monsters emerge? The digestive tract exit of the universe, perhaps? Loozerio advises to let them continue exposing their true nature to the world. Independent voters, are you watching? Are you listening? There can be good government, but not with pathetic corporate sycophants such as Joe Barton infecting it.
Inhofe and Barton are cosmic tapeworm? Yeah, I can see that. Just alittle too vividly in fact.
This apology is timely coming right after last night's great documentary on the rise of the new right. I hope the press is smart enough to follow up on this as an example of how far the right will go to defend the rights of the corporation over the rights of society as a whole.
Bachmann did the same thing, defending BP. Again, I wish senators and congress members would be honest, and dress in jumpsuits emblazoned with the logos of the companies they support, like NASCAR drivers. At least then we'd know who bought them, and for how much, as the primary sponsor would get the biggest logo. We could also stop referring to them like "Joe Barton, (R) TX", and go to "Joe Barton, (R) Anadarko Petroleum".
EXACTLY! How long before we start seeing members in Congress with the logos of oil companies and wall street banks on their lapels instead of the American Flag! "Today, Congress is brought to you by BP, Exxon, Goldman Sachs...", take your pick. You'll see their cars with decals all over them, ala Nascar. Maybe Congress will start doing commercials for them. I am so sick of it. I want to see someone do a story on "the little people". The real little people, like I am. What about the average workers that work for these large corporations -- administrative people, financial analysts, marketing people, etc. The exempt and non-exempt, non-management, non-union employee. How many are being "laid off" to save money. What are their raises like? How many new unemployment applications are coming from the average worker from BP, Goldman, etc?. I'm tired of hearing about the sob stories of the rich. No one is talking about the working poor and how it's affecting them. Everyone thinks they know what the American people want, but they don't have a clue.
Olbermann showcased that ninny on "Worst Person's" last night. I think she was #2 - I would have named her as #1.
"wish senators and congress members would be honest, and dress in jumpsuits emblazoned with the logos of the companies they support, like NASCAR drivers."
LOL That's not a very out there suggestion ... it certainly would suit Congress!!!!
I'll vote for Uffdaguy's idea about the jumpsuits. It would save us all a lot of time on the internet and Google. I can't believe he didn't get the shoes in his face. Or at least been stopped before he made a tremendous a-- out of himself. You know, the "Come on, Buddy, we can't let you expose our bank account."
I doubt if BP even appreciated his crass disloyalty to the government job he stands in with. He's not valuable to them if he is so obvious with his checkbook.
Texas governor, Perry, made a big deal out of secession from the Union. I wonder how they would feel about getting kicked out.
Hee hee hee. I like.
I think it should be a strait jacket embroidered with the logos... that way those nutcases couldnt push the any buttons... Or be a danger to themselves or others...lol Good one.. Tudie like
Talk about being in bed with the oil industry. Did he even bother to wipe off before he took to the podium? That any elected official is defending BP is gross Beyond Putrid.
Why does Rep. Barton even use the term "due process"? Does he think that the people on the gulf coast can wait, while "due process" plays out, to feed their families and pay their bills? Barton is amazingly out of touch, even for a Republican.
Anyone who votes for this maggot is no better than he is. His arrogance is only exceeded by his greed and stupidity.
Its amazing how money hungry the Republican. It should be known that GOP stands for GREED OPPRESSION PRIVILEGED
are you effing kidding me? I mean, does this type of people (Barton, Palin, Bachman) really exist? What happened to plain old critical thinking, humanity and public responsibility? What is a Congressional seat going for these days, $1.4M? Am I high, moved to a parallel universe/dimension, or something like that? Is this what our representatives are being paid to do? is this the best we have to chose from? People of TX, please, do care about your neighbors in the Gulf and FIRE THIS GUY!
They are critically thinking.... about their wallets.
Humanity and public responsibility, it sounds and awful lot like socialism to me. There will be none of that now.
Ferrferr: I agree with you. Anything that remotely reseambles the defense of public interests is labeled as "socialism", etc. It is a shame that our politicians abusethe general public's lack of knowledge about political systems and exploit public fear of certain terms which were undeservingly transformed into expletives.
And that lack of knowledge is being helped by those NEW text books approved by the very state that DumbA@@ is from... Its the winners who write the history books... But this is rediculous.. they are trying to use- How to supress a society.. Guide them quietly into illiteracy, and ignorance.. Shame
In this case it's the whiners who are trying to write the history books.
The committee ripped Hayward a new one!!
In my mind nobody on the commitee did a good job questioning the CEO of BP.
What do they think a CEO does?
They need to talk to the engineers who made the decisions!
Americans first, not oil!
This is the kind of coverage I am addicted to and why I am a totally loyal TRMS fan!
Barton is a sniviling, brown-nose git.
Make that a sniviling brown-nose toady
"Due process"? Is he talking about the due process that is just now paying out from the Exxon Valdez spill? Obama's right for getting some money upfront now.
Interesting this whole "Due Process" thing indeed. NPR actually had news about it this morning. It seems that POTUS does have the authority, through two environmental laws, to force BP to set those $20B aside. It seems that the "due process" (which I take to mean court action with the right to appeal) is not necessary in these cases. But, alas, I'm no expert...
It would seem that by talking about "due process", Rep. Barton is insinuating that BP may have committed criminal acts, ne c'est pas? After all, that is about the only time that term is bandied about. Did Rep. Barton feel the same way about giving Gitmo detainees "due process" by just holding them for years without even a chance to speak with an attorney?
BP has admitted that the gusher is their fault, so it's not as if we need to wait for the "due process" of a trial to determine if they are responsible. The only question at this point is how much this catastrophe will cost them, and I'm betting that $20 billion won't even come close. After all, can you put a price on wiping out a good portion of the Gulf fishing industry, perhaps for years? Or the tremendous damage to the tourist industry? And of course, there is the human cost of thousands of people who may be unable to continue in their jobs because the spill has destroyed their industry.
completely agree with you! However, our addition to fuels, consumer goods, and energy (in short: addiction to oil), is one of the main culprits here. I blame three parties: ourselves (one person = one car, plastic baby), the government ("regulations, why?") and the industry (cartels, price fixing, unethical and unsafe exploitation of natural resources)
"addiction"
This clown is obviously being paid off by BP. The best thing the people of Texas could do in November is flood the ballot box.
At least Rachel has the grit to report this. My hometown newspaper, Minneapolis StarTrib didn't even mention today that Michelle Bachman has taken BPs side on this crisis. Irresponsible rag.
