Arizona State Senator John Huppenthal sat for a recorded interview with Keith Wagner of Tempe's Corona del Sol High School. Republican politician takes question from high school student -- piece of cake, right? Except that Wagner had done some research. Stephen Lemons writes:
The result is freaking hilarious, with Huppenthal so flummoxed that he has to get up and walk away. Keep in mind, Huppenthal is currently campaigning for the GOP nod for Arizona schools superintendent.
Huppenthal manages to make politics look like even less fun than Alvin Greene.

Epic FAIL Huppenthal! You voted for the bill and you don't know what you voted for? Moran. Good job Mr. Wagner. We need more strong people like you to keep their feet to the fire! Keep it up. Don't forget to use the words "Why?" and "How?" a bit more, too.
Exactly why Arizona won the 'Stupidest State-2010" award. Sad to say most of Arizona's politicians are like this.
That young man has a future! Move over Mike Wallace.
please please recap. I live outside Tucson AZ...can't buy bandwidth for any sum to be able to watch online video. (Please, adequate internet access should be a required utility)
There is internet through satellite service and considering I cloud free skies works quite well. Do your research.
Some people don't have satellite internet subscription money you wanker.
Summary you asked for, revgerry - kid asks Huppenthal to reconcile his statements about how important funding for education is with a "yes" vote Huppenthal cast to cut education funding by $550 million two years ago. Huppenthal stumbles, asks to see the particulars of the vote and what committee it was in, which the kid provides. Huppenthal claims to have no memory of it. It get more awkward until Huppenthal excuses himself from the room and never returns.
he didn't need or want a recap he is a apart of a group of people trying to push an completely unrelated topic on the forum. There are more of them below. You obviously are to dense to notice that. And for your information he said it in't available not I don't have it or cant afford it. Stop being a troll.
I think the only troll is you, Booker. There's no "group of people trying to push a completely unrelated topic". It was one dude, asking for a recap because he couldn't watch the video.
Aside: satellite internet isn't available everywhere, either, and it isn't much faster than dial-up (and far less reliable).
See not all Arizonians are stupid. Just the majority of our voters.
Awesome! Way to be prepared for an inteview Mr. Wagner!
And epic fail on Huppenthal's part.
Keith Wagner is THE MAN!
Nice! Well done.
Hey, Don Quixokie, Loozerio seconds that motion. Keith Wagner clearly has a keen mind, and he combined it with good research to get great results. Huppenthal has now been exposed as an intellectually vacuous charlatan. He has no business being a state superintendent of schools, but he is probably the best that the Republicans have to offer, given their openly anti-intellectual, pro-anything-business platform.
Assuming nobody puts a hit on that that kid, he's going to have a great future. Need more like him.
Some would consider your dark cynicism a stretch, but for Loozerio it is not. The history of the right wing is a cavalcade of black bag dirty tricks, coups d'etat and assassinations. That being said, journalists are spared the assassination part of the right wing operational paradigm, because they have no direct decision making hegemony. They may, however, become the targets of efforts to discredit. Still, Loozerio urges Keith Wagner to forge onward into the world of journalism. His future efforts may contribute to the maintenance of our precious democracy.
Aye. Motion carried.
Well, there's the problem in AZ! Apparently they don't have high speed internet. Without it, the population literally has no idea what's really going on in the world.
Oh, and politicians don't really vote on issues. They vote whichever way the money tells them to.
rofl!
wooHOOOOO! AAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! what a great clip. huppenthal shown to be the bumbling fool!

And the right wonders why the country is turning against them. Dam he's dumb.
I lived just north of CdS High School growing up in Tempe. Great school, and it's obviously still turning out exceptional students. Way to make these politicians accountable, Keith!
Just another example of the lack of respect many politicians give to others. I'm sure Mr. Huppenthal thought this would be a cake walk. Kudos to Mr. Wagner for being serious, thorough and prepared, and willing to ask tough questions. I doubt the Mr. Huppenthal learned his lesson, be he should be ready to account for his actions to anyone that asks.
LOL - Perhaps he should view Brewers little dig at those critics who she claims haven't "read the bill."

Kudos to the kid doing the interview!

Way to go, Keith Wagner! And Senator Huppenthal probably went to chew out a staffer for letting him be schooled by a High Schooler.
Mr. Wagner vs. Sen. Huppenthal - Decision Wagner by a knockout.
Having suffered first-hand the incompetence of the current superintendent of schools, Tom Horne, I can say with absolute surety that Huppenthal would be even WORSE. (If you want to see any recent Arizona high school graduate with any reasonable degree of intelligence go into a furious tirade, ask him or her about the AIMS test.)
Bill Maher may want to reconsider giving Arizona the "Stupidest State" award. Yes, we produced Huppenthal...but we also produced Wagner! (Besides, I think the award should have gone to South Carolina).
I was pulling for TexASS, but I'll take AZ
It might be easier to give a NOT STUPID state award. It would narrow the field a lot and make the decision a lot easier. There would be only two, at the most, contenders, and I can't, off of the top of my head, think of those two.
Illinois would never make it, and New York would certainly be excluded. I hear Rudy Giuliani thinks he might run for president, AGAIN. Missouri need not apply, they produced Rush Limbaugh.
The Arizona case of the Superintendent of Schools is a prime example of the problems of the education system in the United States. It's got to the point where the graduates have to get their own education in spite of the system.
I agree that Mr. Wagner should get the 'intelligent vote' in that interview, but he's also going to get, if the political field remains business as usual, a lot of threats. That's all these geezers know how to do. They don't handle embarrassment, well.
We can just hope he has the stamina to withstand the jungle of politicians and the judgments of the media. He has a lot of promise but he's very young. He may have just gotten his most valuable lesson if he wants to be a journalist.
I liked South Carolina for the award myself, but I have to admit Arizona rightly won. South Carolina only has a couple of issues: corrupt politicians and vote tampering. Arizona has all that plus:
1) Doesn't value education. (Dead last in funding per pupil)
2) A legislature that can't balance the budget, so they sell state capitol buildings, close rest areas, close state parks (even though the parks were self supporting, until the state swept their operating funds), cut funding for education (as noted in the video), and too many more to list here.
3) Spends literally millions on litigation for state officials to sue each other for just plain crazy stuff. For example, Gov Brewer's team of private attorneys she wants to defend SB1070 in lawsuits filed against the new law. The proper one to defend is the Attorney General, but that's who will be Brewer's opponent in the fall. Can't have him involved!
4) Can't understand why Arizona can't attract business after more than a few have gotten on national tv to brag about our Mexican drug cartels fighting in the streets, that we're the kidnapping capitol of the country, that the average citizen doesn't feel safe going to the grocery store unarmed. This publicity despite the fact our crime rate hasn't been this low in years.
And those are only the high points...
I think SC has a few more issues than that. I believe they are dead last in percentage graduating high school, among the top in teen pregnancies, and a few other things. Keith went through a litany of "honors" a few months back.
I do not believe that the guy just WALKED OUT of the interview!!! Oh my good God. Running for Superintendent of Schools? I hope he is running against a formidable opponent!!!
the only formidable thing in arizona is the summer heat
Holy Hell, LOL!!
Republicans lie so much, did you notice how easy it was for him to lie to "this kid". God we need more of our youth to be as informed or aware - it would ruin the republican party and force them to stand by their votes under the light of full sun.
With all the love and affection the Republicans are showing Latino Americans, it may not even come to that. Alienating the fastest growing segment of our society could scarcely be called wise.
Wonderful and sad at the same time.
I am going to have tuck that name (Keith Wagner) away for future reference! I hope he continues on this career track and always does the research he did on this one!
Way to to Mr. Wagner! You've just committed more journalism than most of the tools that call themselves 'journalists'. Nicely done!
There is a full version of the video. If this kid doesn't have an internship somewhere he should.

I bet he will.
