Not that there's a connection between those two headlines. Last night on the show, Rachel Maddow showed the world why she always keeps that highlighter on her desk -- it's not for underlining.
Also last night, the House voted to repeal Don't Ask, Don't Tell by 234 to 194. The Senate Armed Services Committee voted for repeal 16-12, with the full Senate expected to vote next month.
In other unrelated news, Coast Guard Commander Thad Allen tells Good Morning America that the top kill shows signs of stopping the flow of oil from the Deepwater Horizon, though it's too soon to know for sure. May the force be with them.

Rachel must have some kind of powers, I tried this with my highlighters and it did not work :) I was very disappointed!
On the note of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" It was about the time. Why is it that men and women can give their lives for this county that does not allow them to be who they are. This never made sense to me and I am glad that something is being done about it. Open gays and lesbians have gone on to do some great things (just look at Rachel). This controversial subject has come a long way and is being excepted by the society more and more as it should be, it does not make people any different. The military should be the first place where people can be who they are, if they are willingly joining to protect the country, and give their lives, they should enjoy all the freedoms that they fight for, and for the people that they are protecting, the every day citizen should support them 100% at all times irregardless who they are.
After noticing how 18 year old draftees were not allowed to vote, we decided that maybe something needed to change in 1971.
DADT is just about as late as allowing 18 year olds to vote, if they are in line to go to Vietnam.
I congratulate the House that voted to repeal it and encourage the Senate to repeal DADT.
I agree SandyC954, this has gone on for way to long and it needs to end.
I believe BP halted pumping to "weigh-up the mud" to overcome geologic pressure which was clearly forcing the mud back out of the drill column. and yes, I did work offshore for several yrs to pay-off my student loans.
Text of letter sent to Jim Webb:
I am very disappointed in your vote on the repeal of the Don't Ask Don't Tell legislation. The study that is in process regards *how* the military would implement the DADT repeal. It already acknowledges that a repeal is on the way. I do not feel that waiting for this study to be complete was necessary.
DADT is morally repugnant and should never have gone forward. Its repeal is long overdue.
Adm. Allen has been an amazing leader in two crises now. Are we looking at a potential future canidate?
I don't understand why the military is stalling. Meantime, do they continue discharging people? And why are they suddenly asking the troops for an opinion? The Army suddenly turned into a democracy?
Glad the House passed the Amendment but it still left me scratching my head.
They're asking for opinions because it's a stall tactic. Same with asking the troops' parents how they feel about repealing DADT. The people on the review board are doing everything they can to find some way to show that DADT should still be relevant.
In the meantime, soldiers like Choi and Fherenbach (sp) are still being dishonorably discharged. As I stated below, this isn't a repeal, it's pushing the responsibility.
jedi maddow u are now :) where can i get one of those highlighter-lightsaber
Easy! First buy a couple of highlighter pens. Then buy a TV studio and hire some talented video editors! ;)
If you are on a budget, get a camcorder and a copy of Final Cut or Premier edit software. Then watch this video:
Final Cut: Creating Lightsaber Images

Yes, that's what I did, only I used this one:
http://www.metacafe.com/watch/400298/how_to_lightsaber_effect_video_tutorial/
because he does it on a PC instead of a Mac. The actual rotoscoping took about 5 hours, including a couple major mess-ups.
A total of 4 highlighters and one Radio Shack antenna gave their lives for the project. :)
in a totally

on the topic of the spill in the gulf
why don't we just send a sub down there
shoot the gushing hole with a missle
so the cave collapses in on itself
thus n thereby plugging the hole
...as i understand it...
the deposit in question
whatever its dimensions
...is a mile under water...
and a mile further under rock
or something beyond safety tolerance ?
where we don't need to worry about it ?
a teeny tiny needle size hole
to a cantelope or coconut...
it won't open up the chasm, it will plug the hole
and let's get some scientists to weigh in on it
all that pressure of the ocean up above it
will help randomize n compact the rubble
from there u can monitor n manage seepage, if any
but the point is to turn off the squirting hose asap
unless this is meant to be a comedy
and there's
no explosive in the world
to my mind or imagination
that could open it up like a cavity
as much as we may wanna caution, of late
...n stay away from nukes... justa be safe...
but throw a torpedo at the offending issue
...or are we... killing red tide, or something
cuz global warming
offset the balance
i dunno, these are questions
i have for the end of geek week
...which... should be... every week... to my mind...
...long as people are taking themselves seriously
;o)
that could fracture the casing & surrounding strata enabling continued flow that was diffused thus escaping fm a much larger area w no way to seal it off.
nah, it's possible
look into it
fire a laser at it
something
use yer imagination
better than shrugging
throw some old tires n styrofoam on toppa it
...n after all that, pave it...
put a coupla stories o cement over it
drive an old used sub INTO it
that's now i wanna be decommissioned
;o)
Why are you still insisting this is a repeal of DADT. All this vote is doing is moving the responsibility of repeal from the legislative branch to the executive/military branch of the government. There's no actual repeal.
While this could be considered splitting hairs, it's important to note that gay servicepersons can still be discharged for being outed even after this bill passes. There is no stop to discharges, and DADT is still on the books.

White Russians only, or Pina coladas if I'm feeling particularly festive.
OMG, the lightsaber bit was amazing. Rachel Maddow is a Jedi!
LOVE IT!
i only got money to buy highlighters 0_0 Never seen a yellow lightsaber not even in star wars.......guess it's bestowed to rachel now;)
Consider dropping two separate tubes down to the oil leak and sending two different materials down those tubes in parallel that combine and react at the leak site -- an analogous approach to combining an epoxide and a catalyst hardener to create a cover.
Bruce Moore and Charles Higdon, Hudson FL, neighbors with ideas
Too bad she didn't whip that thing out on Rand Paul. He might have done a better job answering her questions!
Ron Paul voted yes on DADT! That man is one of the few shining lights in the Libertarian-errr-republican party.
Rachel, Are you able to give us some insight on why the only Republican YEA vote was from Rep. John Shadegg (R-AZ)? Is there any idea why he supported it while the entire rest of the Republican representatives voted NAY?
the gop will use this to foam-up & fund-raise the wingnuts similar to gay marrage in 04.
Mplsross, You may want to recheck that vote. Repubs did fail in their votes though. And as far as I can tell Shadegg voted nay.
Hey, joeinharlem, you're right. Thanks for pointing out my error.

According to http://clerk.house.gov/evs/2010/roll307.xml the lone Republican vote was Shadegg.
My error. This is not the actual Bill that moves repeal of DADT forward. I apologize. I was wrong about Shadegg.
Wyatt = luckyyy (as Napoleon Dynamite would say); he gets a shout-out/email read from Rachel on-air! "Gosh!" And I loved the lightsaber gag, however, now Ms. Maddow and MSNBC will very possibly be sued by or cough up some money to Lucas, who's perfectly fascist with regard to his copyrights (a portion of every Droid cellphone goes to him).
That not withstanding, Ms. Maddow will be in an excellent position when renewing her contract with MSNBC after one week having 'the interview heard 'round the world' with Rand Paul, and the next the Ixtoc flashback segment referenced or used in Congress (was that follow up also get cut from the show?).
And the amendment to repeal DADT passed on the eve of the Memorial Day weekend; wonderful. Here's to all those who have sacrificed so much, including who they are, in defense of their nation. Paraphrasing the quote about the X-Men, "sworn to defend a nation that hates and fears them." Maybe we'll see that change.
That was one of my favorite funny spots - seriously well done funny - old pooh segment included. Coupled with awesome news on one of the most hurtful subject matters - good god, it actually looks like it will happen, DADT to get thrown out finally...hopefully...I like what Boxer said, we need to repeal DADT so "America can be more American".
For all the Paul haters, Ron Paul was one of FIVE Republicans to vote for the repeal.
I knew Rachel would do something with lightsabers: the geek-week logo featured a professor at a chalkboard with a light saber as a pointer (for those born after IM, classrooms had slate chalkboards, and pointers were wood, not keychain lasers).
Dont ask, dont tell.....
When I was in the military we had squad bays and community showers. So I guess that since gays can serve openly that means that men and women can shower together, same issues.
There are other issues involved, years ago I was on a private venture in Saudi Arabia. The individual that shared the apartment was gay, I did not know this till they became "lonely". Even if gay was accepted camaraderie in hostile environments, under stress can be misconstrued with associated problems. In the current context then rather than sharing an apartment with the same sex I should be able to share it with the opposite - then I would not be so lonely.
The modern military must be great, men and women together, men and men and women and women - no one will be lonely.
