Anita Fream, CEO of Planned Parenthood of Central Oklahoma, has one of the tougher jobs. Her state is down to a handful of doctors who'll perform an abortion. The state legislature just overrode a veto to pass a pair of draconian laws with new hurdles for women, and it's considering others. Last night on the show, she told Rachel Maddow that the aim of abortion foes is to make the service functionally illegal.
From the transcript:
Fream: I do think that is the effect and it is very clear that is the ultimate goal. That is not a secret. That is a strategy that's talked
about fairly openly.
Maddow: How many abortion providers are still operating in Oklahoma? And I guess, what is the morale of those health care providers right now given this environment?
Fream: I think there are about three. I may be missing one in there.
Fream, cnt'd: Morale varies. We have good relationships with our local provider who is a wonderful person. But, you know, it's tough. Every time one of these new laws goes into place, it makes it harder to provide the procedure and makes their legal risk greater and restricts what kinds of medical decisions they can make, which is something I assume no doctor wants to have to deal with.
Maddow: In terms of Oklahoma in the broader context of what is happening with abortion rights in this country, a lot of people who are pro-choice are looking at what's happening in Oklahoma, in Nebraska and some other states that have considered very restrictive measures recently. There seems to be a flurry of them recently. They're wondering if national assistance, national health speaking out about these matters helps or hurts, whether or not people addressing these issues nationally seems like carpetbaggers to those of you, for example, in Oklahoma or whether or not, at this point, people who are pro-choice in Oklahoma want national help.
Fream: The need for national help is definitely here. We need everyone speaking out no matter where they are from. I know what you mean about the carpetbagger issue. And I suppose that probably is an issue at times. But we need the voices worse. We need people to speak out.

How about a boycott of anything and everything made in Oklahoma? You mean, no one makes anything in Oklahoma that is distinctively from Oklahoma, and anyone else actually wants?
Where is the city of San Francisco when you need it?
Arizonans did what they had to do -- not the optimal thing, but federal corruption forced their hand. But this is pure religious nuttery. I expect more outrage over this one than you have mustered over Arizona.
I say, tell Anita F. to make sure (we'll back her) in the new bill: when a politician gets a female pregnant, he leaves politics forever, has to serve prison time and from then on, only sleep with his wife.
Of course, the usual tar & feather, shackled to one of those wooden public hand/feet thingys; and a big "A" tattooed on his chest and all clothing (incase he's just too old for the bare shirt thing;(
And any other (past) humiliation put on one human being to another.
Nope, still not harsh enough as what they want to do- to us and our sisters.
This boils my blood like no other. As bad as the law is, what's even worse is there isn't an exception for crime victims. Imagine a teenage girl, raped or a victim of incest and is impregnated...only adding to the horrible nightmare. Thanks to this stupid law, the torment doesn't end, because in order to get an abortion she'll have to undergo a painful invasive "procedure". It's just maddening that this happening. The same people who bitch about government controlled health care, are not only dictating what a woman does with her uterus, but insist she get violated on top of it and put through even more agony. Stay out of our uteruses (uterii? I don't know) and sure as HELL stay out of our privates. Sick freaks.
@Laura276, "stay out of our uteruses," very good point, graphic, exactly as pregnancy and childbirth and recovery are (it takes at least 2.5 years for a woman to recover her health after giving a low-risk birth to 1 child), & then who??? will raise the offspring of the rape? The rapist??? No, it's the darling victim. of course, LOOK, it's the sweet, loving rape-victim mother who wants to have a baby, isn't she just a model citizen because she said NO to an abortion?!!!! OMG isn't that so sweet & cute!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What a trooper, man, what a freakin saint.
For anyone to force anyone to carry and give birth to a child that they don't want - you're just an idiot, and you don't have the RIGHT. Look it up. Idiot, from the Oxford University Press (you know OXFORD, one of the finest educational establishments on the planet!): "informal a stupid person." Let's look up stupid, also: "lacking intelligence or comon sense; dazed and unable to think (italics mine) clearly.
This fine country was based on the power of literacy. Yes, many of the first "Americans" were Pilgrims, extreme versions of England's hated Puritans, but they were NOT our "Founding Fathers." Those were the people that made the abuse of women and children the first order of every day!!!! England HATED them, not because they were being persecuted for Jesus' sake, but because they were f'n MONSTERS!!!! They could NOT be tolerated by any reational government. How's that for the bible-thupming spin we always here from some stupid persno who just pukes out the words of some stupid preacher who has NOT done his research. If he did, he's find this: Pilgrims were Horrible people. They burned women alive for all to watch, while their children watched; after having been tortured & interrogated, many were raped first, by the "men of god" of thier religious cult. These people had to be stopped. And they were. It is NOT the Pilgrims who founded our government. Our government was founded on military defense for the sake of freedom from the oppression of England's monarchy. It was not founded on religion. In this day and time NOBODY has any excuse to say, "Well, not really, no I haven't read our federal state papers." {They're rubbing their 2 brain cells together, 'What does that have to do with anything?'} Everything, it has to do with everything. Religious cults in this nation have been preaching a cultish, religious spin on history. That excuse is OVER. ANYONE can find them online, for free.
The point is, you don't have to be ignorant your whole life. It's your choice. I paid $3,000.00 in 1993 for a set of books that include exact, unabridged copies of federal state papers. If I can pay $3,000.00 for them and find them highly valuable to my knowledge & the knowledge of my children, and well-trusted friends who may borrow them. Now you don't have to even go the the library, yet you all go online spouting off at the mouth. Some of you make me want to puke your words out of my brain, you're so infuriatingly stupid and arrogant, too. And you back it all up with Well God said, anf blah, blah, vomit, vomit, mountains of vomitous "circular reasoning." Circular reasoning:
Do you hang around to share her suffering? Hell to the NO!!! You don't f'n care! You've done your duty for your ingorant beleif system and made it imposible for her to have any freedom. Period. To you she's just another pregnant person; period. You make laws about it, though, so we can be sure who the saints are. "I'm Anti-Abortion, I'm better than you!" wtf-ever . . . She had no plans to conceive, is possibly a risk for BC pills ( a LOT of women are) so what, do we expect EVERY female in the world to be on BC pills in case she gets raped and has to carry, birth, and raise a child whose father brutalized her (& NO, btw, Rape does NOT feel good, it hurts, a lot, look up what happens anatomically when a woman is raped).
This is one of the biggest problems, no one knows anatomy. We're all a bunch of idiots that don't even know that rape significantly hurts the female body, but it does not hurt the raping male's body. So what are we doing, America, is this all coming from an abusive male perspective along with all the happy little women having babies left and right with their darling supportive husbands? They don't give a f'k if you've been raped. And how do we treat rape victims in court? "Oh it's probably her fault, you know, because . . . vomit, vomit, vomit, . . . blah, blah, blah, can you all see how stupid and ignorant I am yet, and how unbelievably selfish I am to think I have the right to control another person's body?!!!!!"
Americans have the greatest country in the world, but we are getting stupider, not smarter. Think, people, rub your brain cells together. DO a little research. It might make you too tired? Oh but you do take the time to vote against abortion rights? And picket abortion clinics, standing there with your gentle little bible with that holier-than-thou look on your pathetic faces. PA-the-tic! I've seen your stupid faces.
Our founding fathers hated people who do these things. They hated any beleif stystem that trampled on the rights of others. "Don't Tread on Me!"
Anti-Abortion is hypocrisy at it's highest level!
It's called 'misogyny' plan and simple...
Reading 'Woman Hating' by the late Andrea Dworkin is a good place to put it into perspective.
again, again, again - let's start punishing the men for abortion..
Rachel forgot to mention another horrible aspect of this new legislation: women will no longer be able to sue doctors who don't tell them there is something wrong with the fetus. Doctors can now withhold information or provide inaccurate information to women about their pregnancies with impunity. So a doctor can let a woman carry to term even if the fetus has life-threatening or serious disabilities without informing her.
Conservatives absolutely want the government out of private matters. Except childbearing choices. And sexual orientation. And identification. And, really, anywhere they can legislate what they consider to be "morality".
Conservatives and liberals are cut out of the same cloth: Liberals want control of what happens in the boardroom, and conservatives want control of what happens in the bedroom. The only intellectually consistent positions are that of the libertarian (the government that governs best, governs least) or the socialist (to each according to his need, from each according to his ability).
As a practical libertarian, I don't fit very well into either camp. Our economy needs an economic balance between rich and poor to be most productive, so I have to oppose the current unchecked flood of illegal immigrants. But as the government doesn't have a dog in the hunt, I have to oppose measures like this, borne of the majority's insistence upon forcibly imposing itself upon the individual through the sledgehammer of government.
I must say that there is nothing ideologically inconsistent with a liberal demanding accountability in a board room and respecting privacy in a bedroom. Frankly, those boardroom decisions affect all of us and therefor are a matter of public good. What consenting adults stick where in the privacy of their own bedroom, nor what religious figures they pray too afterward, has no affect on me and is therefore none of my business.
And that is really the crux of the liberal position and where it is ethically sound while the Regressive (I refuse to give these people the honorable "Conservative" label that denotes several intelligent, well-reasoned people with whom I happen to disagree.) is that they want totalitarian dictatorship over anybody who does not conform to their standards of family, religion, and sexual orientation. They're bigots, plain and simple, who belong in the same dust bin of history as segregationists and anti-suffragists.
.. and they NEVER speak of the men who are at least half the problem!
Mike I.
Except they Don't know or practice any Morality themselves. Who do they think they are
*and how many young girls have they gotten pregnant and made them abort the babe before the wife OR Worse, the public found out!
Priests and Politicians are both from the 'same lying cloth'
Women in OK should protest this by REFUSING to have sex with men accross the state until this law is rescinded !!!!!!! I bet the public outcry (ie - loud, angry men) would be so huge they would have no other choice but to reverse it !!!!!
Oh, I love that, that's a great idea!
It worked for Lysistrata.
Or subject men to invasive penile procedures for ED.
YES! I have been advocating for a chaste society for years!!!!! You want to decide who "pays" for being "irresponsible"? Well women....don't put yourselves in the position!
Great idea - worked for the ancient Greeks
Yeah, I do love these people who want to make the government just small enough to fit into my vagina. What a bunch of blatant hypocrites!
Oh jeez, that's hysterical. Get it? Hysterical?
RM
Hahaha!
"Among those who dislike oppression are many who like to oppress." Napoleon Bonaparte
Choosing Napoleon Bonaparte for your quote - interesting.
Need a statewide network of doctors who pledge not to lie to women who receive fetal ultrasounds from them, and that network needs to be widely advertised so that women have a chance to make informed decisions.
Isn't misrepresentation, lying against ethics codes or licensing standards for physicians? PLUS: what is the language for defining "rape", or sexual assault? It seems to me that having no say in what is put in my vagina, yet a doctor putting a foreign object (ultra-sound probe) into me for no medically justified reason ... this is so damn outrageous!! Legislative rape, legislated rape? Vicarious rape by elected officials?
I think ALL women in OK should REFUSE to have sex w/any men until this law is rescinded .... that will get people (ie - loud, angry men) up in arms about this law. They will have no choice but to reverse it !!!
Sorry .... I accidentally posted this twice .... please see my post above for comments *******
Having once lived in OK, I can tell you that women refusing to have sex with any man is a definite win for women! hehehehe
here is an excellent article by Peter Daou on how this bill is really not about saving fetus' but is about being ANTI-WOMEN. The underlying assumption in this bill is that women are unable to make informed decisions and this law forces to 'educate' them. He goes on to say this is more about suppressing women's rights then it is about protecting unborn fetus'. He points out that it is hypocritical to say that one is so concerned about life when women are raped, burned, mutilated and murdered every day by men.

The question is HOW do we speak out?
sometimes i feel like I am going insane. Do these dopey people in Oklahoma, Nebraska and the other states looking at this kind of legislation think that because they make it harder, that people won't still have abortions? Do they think that before 1973, no one had an abortion? People will still be terminating unwanted pregnancies if they want to, whether by some back room "doctor" or a coat hanger.
What I want to know is what can I do to help! Anyone know how we can help? This new bill is disgusting and totally anti-women. I will always call Oklahoma home but glad to now live on the East Coast. No way would I raise my daughter in Oklahoma. No way.
This law is barbaric and punitive. It has nothing to do with saving lives, and everything to do with humiliating women. What about the impregnator? Why does all the onus fall on the woman? Oklahoma also has one of the highest rates of domestic abuse. If these legislators wanted to save lives, they would enact laws that would protect women from abusers, who are often the impregnators of women who seek abortions. If you are a woman, stay away from Oklahoma!
It seems to me, and I am not a legal scholar, that the current Oklahoma abortion law breaks the 8th Amendment of the Constitution. The 8th Amendment states "Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted." The Supreme Court ruled that the Cruel and Unusual provision DOES apply to the states. Furthermore, this provision does not state that the Amdenment applies only to people convicted in a court of law. The current Ok law forces psychological torment on someone who made a legal choice as a way of punishing them for making that choice. Furthermore, Title 18 USC Chapter 113C 2340 defines torture as: “torture” means an act committed by a person acting under the color of law specifically intended to inflict severe physical or mental pain or suffering (other than pain or suffering incidental to lawful sanctions) upon another person within his custody or physical control. The citizens of Ok are within the control and custody of the Ok laws. This is forced mental pain and suffering upon those within Ok custody as the Legislature has put abortion doctors within their purview and made them law enforcement agents due to this law. I believe Planned Parenthood has a Federal Case under the 8th Amendment and Title 18 of the USC and should look into this. As far as I know, it has never been argued that this provision applies outside of the legal system directly but laws enacted by a legislature are part of the legal system. It would be interesting to hear what Jonathan Turley has to say about it.
Rachel,
What is the best way for us to speak out? Can you do a sement on the show giving us info to let our voices be heard?
Thanks for the idea - I DEFINITELY want to protest this.
I do think this is all about control of women. It's the "Handsmaid Tale" come to life.
Maybe the law needs to be extended. If the claim by the supporters is that they are defending human life, then they should go the full route of the Catholic Church, which sees all contraception as a sin. Before a man can get a vasectomy, he will also need a rectal ultrasound to show him what is going to be done, and he can't look away or refuse. If the ultrasound reveals prostate cancer, the doctor can't disclose that either. There will be a waiting period too, and a long discussion by the doctor about how the vasectomy will change your life forever, that you will suffer physical and emotional scarring, etc.
Good points. Yet, there is nothing comparable or equal about this. We are the ones who are pregnant, but totally depersonalized/devalued in favor of: outsiders', strangers' restrictions put on us to serve their purposes, not our medically necessary needs + embryos & fetuses "protected" over us, an actual person.
Doesn't matter. It's all diversion. The fact remains: my pregnancy is my personal business, private. Nebraska, OK, all the other primitive states are invading privacy & causing harm.
I agree that there isn't really anything completely comparable in the male experience to pregnancy, which is the big problem here. There really isn't anything you can do to men, (who, unfortunately, write almost all legislation in this country), that will give them some idea of the true extent of what they are doing to women with the extreme anti-abortion laws they are proposing and passing. What's also unfortunate is that it isn't just the "primitive" states where this is happening. Even up here in Minnesota, our Twin Cities Planned Parenthood is moving to a new facility that is almost like a fort in some ways in order to protect themselves from anti-abortion protesters. Add that to the fact that many clinics around the nation have closed due to violence, threats of violence and protests, and you can see the religious right has for all intents and purposes repealed Roe v. Wade for many women who no longer can find abortion services anywhere nearby.
The Planned Parenthood and other organizations who are trying to sue or get this changed need to "sell" this as state-mandated rape.
According to Oklahoma's legal definition of rape, I think you're onto something here. Not only do they have laws against "rape by instrumentation" (see http://oklegal.onenet.net/oklegal-cgi/get_statute?99/Title.21/21-1111.1.html), but I think Section 1113 below might actually throw a wrench into the works, so to speak:
What we need here is some Frank Luntz-style framing (sorry to bring up his name!).
One of the definitions of sodomy is inserting an object other than a man's (blank) into a woman's (blank). Forcible sodomy would be inserting said object when a woman is unwilling to participate. Forcible sodomy is a crime in all states that I am aware of, and I'm sure Oklahoma is one of them.
Therefore, the law requiring a vaginal ultrasound in Oklahoma should be renamed the "State Sponsored Sodomy Law".
Try getting a right-winger to be in favor of sodomy!
Uterine invasion with a foreign object, mandated by the state legislature. That does sound like rape-prosecution language right out of CSI. Talk about government getting between a woman and her doctor.
Oh, and what about forcing doctors to become law enforcement agents.....where is that in the Hippocratic oath, the AMA, or the state medical licensing board exam. Law enforcement training could add a semester to Med school.
Can anyone give me an example of a major difference between the radical Islamic culture by which we are appalled and the radical Christian culture which we sit back and allow to dictate our lives here in the US? The severity doesn't matter...only the basis.
This OK law is not only invasive, demoralizing and inhumane, it is downright insane.
Somehow, we have been duped into believing the abortion controversy is about "babies". It is NOT. The true goal is suppression. It always has been.
1. Christian adoption services make tons of boodle on these kids. 2. If they can shame women once, shame us twice, shame us for sex and clothing and speaking out, they have us in westernized burquas.
The religious women go along with it so they aren't isolated and attacked.
I AM SICK! SICK over this!
Don't the people of OK realize that by making a law taking away a woman's right to choose is not going to stop abortions? They are jeopardizing more lives because these women are going to pay any quack off the street to perform the procedure in unsterilized garages with Exact o blades and vodka.
Sure, I could never have an abortion myself, but who am I to say another woman can't? There are a lot of irresponsible women out there who should never bear children and there are even more children waiting to be adopted, the majority who will be tossed through the system their entire childhood. Which is better? Really...
Where are the men?
How is it that Americans continue to punish women for reproductive choice? How is it that Americans believe that women are responsible for reproduction - but not the men who share the outcome of sex?
Why aren't the men in the hospital watching the amnio results? Why aren't the men EVER discussed or judged?
Where are the men?
Molly has a great point between the US and Middle East and how women are treated. True, it is not as harsh as there. But, the concept of telling a woman what she can do with her body and to make her being punished by the viewing of it is the same. Torture and Shame are among the two countries.
As stated earlier, I never had to opportunity to make this decision and so now would say I don't believe i would have an abortion. BUT, I will never tell another women what to do with her own body, and MEN Never Should. SImply put, MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS! Look at your life, or lack of it, and judge yourself!
I believe young girls should be taught right @ ages 12-13 about how strong they are, how important this 'cycle' will be in their futures. To not allow some guy tell them not to use protection, if they can't feel it, that's their problem...
(: I think I may start this :)
Married men should have to confess in church, with families present, @ Sunday Mass. AND, should also be there to see their own baby's body being ______— during the abortion. If she is under the age of 25yrs, he needs to pay heavy fine and 3-5 yrs jail time. He can't get pregnant, however.
OUCH, how harsh!
